Ok, I have a 1993 explorer and ive come to the conclusion that the shift motor on the T-Case is shot. I have purchased a new one but do not have the resources (a garage, or a lift) to replace it myself. I talked to a local mechanic who told me if i had the part he would put it on for just the cost of labor ($66 per hour). I found the part for $75. Any idea on how long it would take a decent mechanic to remove and replace this part. I figured it couldnt take much more than an hour if it is just a quick R&R job.

Thanks a lot

You dont need a garage or a lift to replace the shift motor.

Theoretically you can replace it just as the vehicle is sitting parked. However, it would help if you have a jack and jackstands to give you more room to work with. But replacing the shift motor itself is cake and should take you between 30 minutes and an hour max. All you do is disconnect its electrical connectors, and then unbolt it (I think three 10-mm bolts is all that holds it on).

Oh and thread moved to transmissions and transfer cases.

Yep. I replaced it on my former Explorer (1993) in my driveway, no jack stands or nothing. Just a blanket, safety glasses, 3 bottles of brake cleaner (that really helped) and good lighting.

You might want to get underneath and have a good lock at everything first, then do the work later/some other day. Gives you time to get the right tools and whatever else you might need. I know it took me less than 1 hour, and I did not have any experience in something like that.

Greetings!

Yes the weight balancer is came on all 1st gen T-Cases. It is there to help eliminate vibrations within the T-case at higher speeds. It would also be common to find them missing as the previous owner or mechanic may not of re-installed it.
