'92 XLT
Hello all,
I am new to this board and have a question, any feedback will be appreciated:).
I have a '92 XLT with 142K miles, when I shift to reverse(auto tranny)it will sit still for up to 4 seconds before engaging sharply.also recently the 4WD lights on the dash or beside the buttons wont come on,and it will not shift into 4WD(however it still draws on the battery like it is trying to)the hubs seem fine when I lock them as it engages the front driveshaft, now when driving hwy speed as the rpms drop through the gear I am hearing a "chatter"below my feet, seemingly from the engine/or transmission. Also noticed black liquid from tailpipe, doesnt smell like oil though.
What do you think?

If I were a bettin' man, I'd be tempted to wager money that your t-case shift motor needs cleaning. It's so common on these trucks. Search for "no 4WD" or "transfer case shift motor" and you'll find links and instructions for cleaning it. (and probably a few other possible causes and tests to perform).

With any automatic transmission issue, have you checked fluid level? condition?

Thanks for the reply, fluid level is actually a little to high,I have also checked for leaks, dont see anything(puzzled)!
I will check into the T-C motor thank you sir.

Another WV boy.

Don't know the answer to your problem but i just thought i'd say hi since your just about 30 mins up the road.

Hello there

Yeah, good to see another mountaineer on this board:)
See,I really love this truck down to the plush red interior, however this prob.is urkin' me.

Two are probably unrelated

Nothing unusual to have shift motor problems and a bad low/reverse sero that causes a delay in reverse. If you can handle replacing a transmission filter, this seal replacement isn't any harder. It will cost you under $50. You will do damage if you ignore it. Look for low/reverse servo post in this thread for procedure.

Thank you

Thanks for the replies,greatly appreciated.

UPDATE

For everyone who replied,
I took Mr.Shorty's advice, pulled the t-c motor cleaned the brushes/armature and viola instant 4WD-LIKE NEW,took approx 40 mintutes.Still would like more info on low/rev.servo(if available?)This noise I am hearing in the front (engine/tranny?)sounds like a rattling at high RPM,then when the RPM level out it is a grumble(kinda like an exhaust leak?)I seem to have a power fluctuation when the noise occurs.Dunno? The Haynes manual has nothing of the sort in the troubleshooting section.I am most grateful I figure you saved me a bundle on the 4WD though.Indebted.
