Hello people !!!

Tonight the transmission of my reliable Ford Explorer decided to "break". I was ready to park it when it suddenly die. It was the stupidiest thing I have seen on a car. I put it on reverse, give a little throttle a kaboommm... a hard noise came out and the vehicle got to neutral. It surprise me !!! She won't do nothing in reverse shift, just neutral. Then put it on drive (D) and it advanced normally, without a problem. That gave me the opportunity to turn it around and park it. I test it again... put on reverse...nothing !!! Just a little sound like if she was trying to shift but the shift didn't engage. I'm so supprised by this !!! Beside the ball joints problems, my truck never gave me any other really BAD problem to complaint, just mainteance stuff like brake pads, tires, oil, etc. Brought it brand new, no other owner. Completelly stock.

Ok, here are the facts about my Explorer:

Year: '99
Model: XLT
Engine: V6 4.0L SOCH
Millage: 125,000 aprox.

What in the world would cause this ??? What could it be ??? I know that it sound$$$ bad : (((

I am not a trans expert but it sounds like your reverse band snapped .

If that is the problem then yes it is serious. To fix it would require a rebuild. i got my rebuilt trans from John at 1 stop transmission on ebay.He is a great guy to work with and stands behind his work.

BAD BAD News.... sounds like it could be better to sell the truck as-is... How much would be to rebuild one of this transmissions ??? :(

Better to have it looked at by someone but I replaced my 4r55e in my 96 2wd for 1k but i did the work myself. probably be around 15-2000 at a shop.

Can I use my truck normally ? In D it is fine, but I'm not shure if I use it with the reverse problem could cause more damage.

Thanks !!

I am not sure if further use will damage it any more or not.

Will manual 1st gear work? (i.e. shift to '1', will it drive?) If so, the reverse band is fine, and I'd put my money on it being a transfer case issue. If not, then yes, a trans is needed.

Hello gijoecam,

All gears are fine except reverse. In drive(D) rolls like when I took it out brand new from dealer. Today I ride it to trans mec. with no problem. Let see what's up with reverse...
