97 Explorer AWD 5.0L, 160k miles.
Two weeks after replacing the front axle for problems, now this. I was traveling on the Florida Turnpike (speeds of 70mph) with a temperature of
51* outside Friday night heading to my sister inlaws house to watch the kids for the weekend. As we exit off onto the off ramp we come up to the traffic light, when it turns green for us to go I lightly press the pedal move about ten feet and a loud bang occurs. Forward motion ceased to exist at this time, along with reverse.
If you put the transmission into drive or any of gear it sounds like you dropped marbles into a blender and turned it on. You can also push it forward or backwards with it in park. While waiting for a tow truck to take the Explorer back home (92 miles) and get our other car, I thought maybe it was the transfer case at first. It still could be, but I highly doubt. The kicker was when I checked the fluid and it was black. And it wasnt when I left, unlike most people I check everything before going on a long distance trip. It also was flushed 15k miles ago.
I probably will not be dropping this thing myself since I am moving from this house in two weeks. As you can tell, this is very bad timing for me. With the moving and wedding in two months my wallet is very thin. I am hoping to get some help and ideas on wether this is going to be a major repair or is this a non expensive repair? I just got home and I have been thinking about what it could be, also on wether to have it repaired versus replacing the whole unit. Trying to weigh the costs, but without knowing whats wrong internally I cant estimate what would need to be done. I have never encountered this transmission breaking something like that internally.
Any tips, ideas, opinions would be great. Remember, I cannot take this apart at my current house, I am moving. I would prefer not to do it anyways on the ground. Thank you.
