According to the Owner's Manual, this procedure has to be done by the dealer. There is no dipstick.

Here's a picture of the ST transmission. The dipstick is under the orange plug shown on the driver's side of the transmission case. Most owners aren't going to be interested in going under their Explorer to check the transmission fluid level, ergo Peter's post.

Check while running or not? I assume there is a warm and cold level on some sort of mini dipstick there under that cap.....

From what I gathered. Check when trans is at normal operating temp. While running. Small capped dipstick on Pass side, set fluid to the B level. Highly recommend to do on a lift.

I'm very interested in the trans, ptu and rear diff oil check and replace. On the 15' escape they under filled all from the factory. So you'd get some odd behavior early on.

edit: Will a light come on, on the dash, if the transmission fluid level/amount has gotten too low ?

In reading the Owner's Manual, it does not appear that there is a low fluid level warning light. The only way to check the level seems to be to remove the transmission fluid plug, which according to the manual should be done by the dealer. If the level is low, use a pump to add the fluid until it begins to overflow and then reinsert the plug.

That is very unfortunate. If someone developed a leak that had to be topped off once/week, there goes their transmission bye bye bye....

......................or get the leak fixed if the expense is worth it on an almost 20 year old vehicle.

Yes, but they may not know the leak is that fast...... since they are not gonna do Ford's procedure once/week.
(By the time they know, it's too late.)

There usually will be signs that the fluid is low by the way the transmission operates. In my opinion the best thing to do is to have a dealer or transmission shop have a look at it. Otherwise, take your chances.

I would go to your Ford dealer for it. Take your VIN along to make sure you get the correct part.
