Will be doing transmission flush tomorrow - got access to a flush machine, the only thing need to do is to get some transmission fluid. How much should I get? I remember seeing 12 liter pails in stores, would that be enough? How much fluid actual v6 SOHC tranny holds?

5r55e takes 4 quarts

English, please :-)
I guess I am not getting it... How much is a quart?

use mercon V

a quart is one bottle like oil. it will tell you on the bottle how much is in it. also this is for a 97 correct?

Yep, 97

If you're going to do a flush, you need at least 12 quarts of Mercon V. Probably closer to 14-15 if you want the fluid to look really clean.

yes, i was telling you the capacity. sorry

1 quart is approximately .946 liters, so if you need 14-15 quarts, then you will need 13.249-14.195 liters. Some of these people didn't realize that you are from Canada; therefore, you aren't used to using U.S. units. The only reason I've gotten used to metric and living in Mississippi is that my company makes frames for Nissan (Japan) and our robots are ABB (Sweden), and the assembly line is setup by several different companys that are based our of Germany. Basically, I need only metric tools at work unless I happen to be working on the Miller welders or other little stuff here or there such as plumbing.

We just did a power flush on Spas's tranny last weekend. system capacity of the 5R55E is 10 quarts (approx 10 litres) and we used about 15 to do the flush.

I did mine a few weeks back and used 15 qyarts of Mobil 1,

I had mine proffessionally done and they flushed over 30 qts thru the tranny. That is about what you'll need for a full flush. They also put in an additive to remove any small particals and/or water. You need to flush twice the capacity if you want to do it right.

Actually 15 quarts is a bit overkill. The capicity of mine is 9.5 l.

i was looking through the haynes manual and it said 4 quarts (drain and refill) is that not right? but as jason_25 pointed out hes doing a flush.

As I said above, the capacity of the tranny is roughly 10 quarts, not 4. I don't have my Haynes manual handy, but if it says 4, it's wrong.

You need more fluid than capacity to do a power flush because some of the old mixes with some of the new when the flush is performed. You end up discarding some of the new to ensure the tranny is clean.

You need more fluid than capacity as Jeff stated. Yoi need enough to insure that the outflow is fresh new xolored fluid. This is easily achieved with 15 quarts of AYF.

You need more fluid than capacity as Jeff stated. Yoi need enough to insure that the outflow is fresh new colored fluid. This is easily achieved with 15 quarts of ATF.

Trans Flush

I removed my trans pan and installed a drain plug at 50,000 miles. I have a 1999 5 speed automatic. I drain the pan and replace the trans fluid in the pan every 10,000 miles. Is this almost as good as good as a power flush?

No, you are only changing less than half the fluid. 10k might be too soon to change also.
