2004 Explorer XLS 4WD
Hello everyone, I have a 2004 Explorer XLS with a 4.0L and a 5r55s (code: V)
This car currently has 61,x.. miles on it and ive had it since 49,x... It was garage kept by my grandfather and everything up to 49,x.. has been maintained as per the owners manual. Since ive had the car, its had an issue of going into neutral and just reving after an emergancy or hard stop. After a few seconds it jolts the entire car back into gear.

From what ive read this is a common issue of tranny low fluid, however this past weekend I checked the level and it seems fine with fluid dripping out of the check plug hole. To ensure I did it correctly I will write about how I checked the fluid. I used a OBD scanner and with tranny temp at 112, I then jacked up the car on 4 stands and had them as even as possible on a driveway. I then shifted through all gears and ended in park then opened the fill plug. Clean red fluid dripped out so I assumed it was as proper level.

I will check the fluid again today or tommorow just to be sure it was at proper level and do a complete filter and fluid replace. But any ideas as to what it could be or what failures it could be pointing to? (i.e. solenoid pack failure)

Thanks!

Could it be the transfer case?

How is your shift linkage? Meaning the adjustment of the column shifter cable, perhaps the hard stop is putting strain on the cable and actually shifting the trans from d into n for a second? The shift cable is attached to the body/dash and then to the frame so any large movement in the body mounts or flex could cause it to physically shift gears

Interesting theory but definitely one worth checking out, is there any way to check the shift linkage?

Was the internal filter replaced recently? The 4WD filter has a deep sump pick up while the regular filter is made for a smaller pan. The regular filter shouldn't be used with a deep pan. Leaking filter O rings could create an issue as well since it will draw air into the system bypassing the fluid in the pan.

The transmission filter has not been replaced recently but I will do it this weekend. The filter I bought is this Wix one-off rock auto.
My car is a 4x4 and the Transmission code is "V" for a 5r55S how would I check if I have a deep pan?

Im pretty sure the problem was low fluid. Did a fluid and filter change this weekend and now when coming to hard stops it does not shift into neutral anymore. Thanks to everyone that helped
