A little history: My '92 Ex was given to me by my girlfriend when she got tired of trying to sell it. Two years ago the transmission started slipping really badly and she gave up and bought a new car. I've driven it once, with the plans to pull a transmission at the junk yard, rebuild it, and swap it with the one in there... but yesterday I drove it around the yard a bit, paying more attention to it... and it feels like it's just not switching gears properly. Shifting from park to drive it doesn't budge, but bump the throttle lightly and it'll clunk then go, as if it just hadn't actually shifted. Same for reverse. Once it's going, it goes without a problem.

All that said, I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to further diagnose the A4LD in the Ex (and possibly save it) before I spend $1200 rebuilding this transmission I pulled. Any suggestions?

I know you're going to want to tell me to search... and I did, but most threads I found regarding a slipping transmission were someone saying their trans died and want to know various things about a better replacement. If you know of a thread that will help, PLEASE link me to it and I'll read up myself.

Thanks for everything, guys!

I'm a fawking tool. I never checked the ATF. Three quarts later and it's shifting like butter. :D

I saw that this was in the wrong section, so I've moved it to the transmission section. Automatic transmissions are very sensitive to a low fluid condition since they rely on hydraulic pressure to engage the clutch plates, and servo accumulator pistons.
