OK, yes, I searched and read a bunch of transmission threads, but none of the ones I read covered my issue, so here goes..

Vehicle: 2002 Explorer, 4.6L 4x4, just under 90,000 miles.

So it was my mothers car before it was mine, the transmission was rebuilt at around 60k, and I took the vehicle over at about 75k. I noticed the issues from day one, but my mother said it was fine, I don't think it is. I have two issues.

1.) When cold, it hangs in first gear, regardless of how hard I'm pushing the pedal, until 4k rpms. once the vehicle warms up, it stops doing that.

2.) When the transmission shifts off-throttle (like I release the gas pedal, and it shifts) it hits the next gear hard. If i keep my foot on the gas it shifts smooth.

3.) Slow to down shift; I put the pedal to the floor, it thinks for a few seconds, then shifts down, I can get almost to a three count (one one thousand, two two thousand three thre-shift)

OK, I come from manual transmission world, are these items normal? they really don't feel normal to me, but I don't have anything to compare it to as my mom now has a newer V6 explorere with the 6speed auto that shifts like lightning, and my dad has an F-350 with a V10, which is completely different (although smoother than the explorer for some reason).

If they arent normal, what could the issue be? I mean if it's a real thing, then I'm probably bringing it to AAMCO where she got it rebuilt and making them fix it, but I'd like to have some kind of understanding as to what the issue is caused by.

I have checked the fluid level and its fine, the fluid doesnt appear to be scortched, I am aware it needs a fluid & filter change soon, but like I said the issues have been there since I started driving it.

I appreciate any input

To begin with, Aamco is the worst. They do the least for the most money and many times the fix isn't fixed. Having said that it could be a couple of things. I'm assuming they changed the oil and filter. If not, do that first. The next thing which is common is a bad solenoid. You can't buy just one as its in a pack of three. Its about $350 from a Ford dealer plus labor. Bring it back to them and have them get the codes and then you will be sure. Also, is the OD light flashing?

I don't have a check engine light, and my OD light is not flashing.
Well the thing is, it was rebuilt by them, so now I'm pretty much stuck with it if I want the work done without shelling out additional money for it, as it is still under thier warranty.

I was hoping that it would get warmer out so I could drop the truck off for them to fix and just ride my motorcycle, but seeing as we are getting snow Thursday/Friday/Saturday I don't think the motorcycle is going to get out of its resting place before mid-april.

So looks like I have a real issue here and I'm not just crazy, thanks for the reply.

How did you check the fluid level?

It sounds like potentially: fluid level, dirty/old fluid, solenoid block, and/or servos in that order.

drove the truck around until it was warm, while it was running crawled under there and put a wrench on the drain plug, used an allen wrench to loosen the inner plug, it dripped a little bit then stopped, that means the right amount of fluid is in there right?

This is also how I found out the fluid wasnt scortched or dirty looking.

You are at least ½ a quart low, then.

I checked it with my expert friend. He also use that order but I'm curious about that solenoid black. How can you check it?

Start by getting the fluid level up to the proper amount and see if that remedies the issues you are having...the 5R55 gets weird with low fluid.

Gears

I have a 2005 Ford Explorer that when i go to put the SUV in gear it won't go out of park. What could be my issue? Is this an easy fix. Someone said it could be stuck or the synchronizer is gone. HELP HELP HELP
