This week has been full of surprises and mysteries for me. I pulled my transmission to replace my rear main seal, and decided to go ahead and replace the front pump seal at the same time. I think to myself, it can't be a big deal changing the front pump seal, and sure enough it isn't, but there is still a problem.

I know that my Ranger has a trusty 4R44E 4 speed automatic overdrive transmission with reverse, suited for a 3.0L V6. This is confirmed not only by the exhaustive searches I have done for information, but simply by the VIN plate on the door jamb. HOWEVER COMMA! every parts store, including Napa, Autozone, and a small time place have told me that my truck runs a 4R70W. No, it doesn't. So as you may imagine it has been tricky to find the front pump seal for my transmission. I even bought what I knew was the wrong seal in a desperate effort to find something that works. So, my questions are:

Why is there any confusion?
Where can I get the correct part?

Thanks for any help you can give me. Semper Fidelis.

[edit]

I forgot to mention, I found this website :

http://www.fordtruckfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1960

with the parts list for a 4R70W that shows the front pump seal part number. I also found this number printed on my old seal. I'm confused.

Thanks again.

Ha, there is no ranger with that transmission. The 4r70W goes behind the 5.0. The parts places are dumb. Try to get it for another vehicle with that transmission, like an explorer. I tried to get the gasket for the IAC on my truck today. The guy at Autozone tried to tell me it doesn't have one. Unfortunately the days of parts stores knowing what they are talking about are basically done.

I tried your idea at autozone, they gave me the same part number as when I was looking for my own truck. I am going to talk to the local Ford Dealer tomorrow.
