Hi all,

A couple of days ago, heading home from camping with family and friends, my 99 Explorer auto started leaking transmission fluid (I think).

I had been doing some light offroading on sand and gravel tracks for approx 2 hours before driving along the highway for 45 minutes. We stopped at a shop for a break and immediately noticed black smoke coming from the engine bay and under the car. A quick inspection later found what appeared to be transmission fluid dripping from the underside of the vehicle. From what I could ascertain, a relatively small amount of this fluid spurted out of a steel pipe onto the underside of the transmission pan and the exhaust system (hence the smoke).

The steel pipe in question points pretty much towards the ground, is a little thinner than a pencil, and is located on the passenger side (RH drive vehicle) of the transmission pan. It comes from the bellhousing. I have absolutely no idea what it is for.

We ended up stopping for about half an hour and the leak seemed to stop immediately, apart from the fluid still dripping from the undercarriage.

I called a local Ford dealership, but the dope was uninterested in helping, other than suggesting getting it looked at. That was unlikely as I was over 3 hours from home with 3 kids and the wife with me.

There was no noticeable amount of transmission fluid missing, and the tentative drive home showed no further smoke or leaks.

Can anyone help me out with a description of what this pipe is for, what happened, and/or what the likely cause was?

Someone correct me if im wrong, but I believe its just an overflow valve type thing. (Drains fluid if its over a certain level)

It happened to me in my 95, the radiator was messed up, and the coolant/trans fluid were mixing, and it caused most of that wonderful mixture to pour out onto my driveway.

Im not sure why it would randomly start pouring out like that though if no fluid or anything was added...have you checked the coolant? And is the fluid clean?

Thanks for the prompt reply BrianDye.

We had the transmission replaced with an reconditioned exchange unit 12-18 months ago. I don't think I've had it do any offroading this serious since then. The trans fluid hasn't been topped up or changed since then so I can't see why it would happen either. Coolant level seemed fine and so did the colour of the leaked fluid.

Certainly a strange one...

The tube is the transmission vent.

Thanks Swetrid. Any idea as to the cause of my overflow?

Either it iss overfilled or it overheated.

Overheated/boiled the fluid...Over Filled....

OR

Did you drive through any REALLY deep puddles? I'm talking something that came up to midway through the door? If you did, it could have sucked some water IN through the top of the tube bends where the vent holes REALLY are, and that caused your 'overfill' condition.
