Hi all,
A couple of days ago, heading home from camping with family and friends, my 99 Explorer auto started leaking transmission fluid (I think).
I had been doing some light offroading on sand and gravel tracks for approx 2 hours before driving along the highway for 45 minutes. We stopped at a shop for a break and immediately noticed black smoke coming from the engine bay and under the car. A quick inspection later found what appeared to be transmission fluid dripping from the underside of the vehicle. From what I could ascertain, a relatively small amount of this fluid spurted out of a steel pipe onto the underside of the transmission pan and the exhaust system (hence the smoke).
The steel pipe in question points pretty much towards the ground, is a little thinner than a pencil, and is located on the passenger side (RH drive vehicle) of the transmission pan. It comes from the bellhousing. I have absolutely no idea what it is for.
We ended up stopping for about half an hour and the leak seemed to stop immediately, apart from the fluid still dripping from the undercarriage.
I called a local Ford dealership, but the dope was uninterested in helping, other than suggesting getting it looked at. That was unlikely as I was over 3 hours from home with 3 kids and the wife with me.
There was no noticeable amount of transmission fluid missing, and the tentative drive home showed no further smoke or leaks.
Can anyone help me out with a description of what this pipe is for, what happened, and/or what the likely cause was?
