I just started hearing a noise coming from my tranny.

It only makes noise when in gear. In park and neutral, the noise gos away. It sounds like someone is banging on aluminum cans or something.

I thought it was the U-Joints but it is coming from inside the tranny.

Do you guys think just an oil change and filter change will fix the problem or will it need overhaul soon?

Possibilties

Welcome to the board.

When the truck is nice and cool...grab some cardboard and climb underneath.

Older exps are known for clanging cat heat shields.
Mine was spot welded in 4 spots and one was cracked making that clanging.

Try changing the fluid first and see if there is metal in it.

Hey oahrens
Thanks for the reply. I live in Minnesota and there is a lot of salt that gets put down on the pavement, thuse causing rust. Well, the heat shield that you talked about did indeed rattle a little because of the rust, however it finally rusted off. So I threw that away.

Do you think that too much tranny fluid will make the tranny sound like this in gear? The fluid is a little higher than recommended.

Thanks bud, any help is appreciated.

No, too much fluid won't make any noises. It would just blow out the vent tube when the pressure built up enough in the transmission.

No problem,

Another easy one is the tranny mounts...
Take a jack...2x4 on top and see if the tranny moves too much.
