Hey guys, was hoping someone could help me out. My 2002 XLT has some strange noises when starting up in cold weather, it makes a whirring noise w/o pressing on the gas or anything. I read a TSB somewhere that changing the transmission filter might help that. If so, does anyone have any good tips on that, and do I need to change the fluid as well, (I'd think so but wasn't sure since I haven't stuck my head under there to really loo

same issue looking forward to answer...

Guys: For the cost involved - I would do both the tranny oil and filter (unless you know for a fact it had been changed w/n the last 30-50,000 miles).

I didn't realize it was a transmission noise...so both posts have been helpful...I get the whirrling noise but I was not sure where it was coming from...thanks guys!

It could be low on fluid. Did you check the fluid level? The level changes when it's hot, and might look low if you check it when it's cold. Check it when it's hot, on level ground, and with the engine running.

I had it checked just a couple weeks ago and it was ok...still not sure how to check it myself with no dipstick...arrrr

Thanks Brook...I've read it and it's the craziest thing I've ever read...the reading of the fluid level is completely subjective and filling is harder than changing the engine in most cars...

that should have been the first mod on the board...

update...ended up being a bad torque converter...

Thanks for the update!

No problem too bad it was just replaced 1100 miles ago...good thing I still have the warrenty from the guy that rebuilt it...but no truck for a few days...

Looks like a common thing....I'm going to take mine into ford to do, after reading about the lack of dipstick and having to fill using that method, I think I'll leave it to the dealer. Don't know if it will fix, but needs to be done.

Question is the following...

I've called two different dealers in KC, and one wants $120, (but doesn't sound like the flush it)

The other is $169, which they hook it up to some sort of machine for $169. Anyone have opinions on this?

Thanks
