1998 explorer automatic 4x4 will not move in forward or reverse, if the transfer case is bad could it cause this?

Transmission or transfer case problems?

it could, but it also could be the transmission as well,
when you shift out of park does it make any noises ?
if the transfer case is not working when you shift back into park it will make a ratcheting sound,, a loud clicking in the transmission,

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the transmissions & transfer cases section. It sounds more like a transmission issue. Did you check the fluid level?
