transmission problem

Hey! i have a 1997 ford explorer XL and the transmission is acting up- its a auto and it has a hard time going into reverse and now it wont go into third- it just revs and revs but picks up when i drop it in second....

does anyone know if this is a common problem/.

I wouldn't say common but it does sound like there is a problem with the direct drum inside the transmission or multiple failures inside the transmission which is not uncommon.

You will most likely have to rebuild or replace the transmission. Have a shop check it out for you and maybe have them pull the pan down to check for debris.
