Transmission question.

Has anyone ever tried to put a 5R55 into a first gen? The extra gear would be a great thing, since the stock one is only a 3 s with a O/D

you would need a transmission controller like this:

or you could just swap the engine transmission pcm and full wire harness from a newer explorer.

If you were going to change out for a newer transmission though, where you are gonna have to buy a controller and whatnot.... I would go for something like a 4t60HD or an Allison 1000 if you want a 5 speed auto. 4th gen allison is available with a 6 speed.

Your A4LD has 4 gear ratios. 5th gear on a 5R55E is virtual. It's a trick that the computer is capable of doing by combining gear ratios. James has a sticky thread in the transmission section on swapping a 5R55S.
