1996 Ford Explorer 5.0L
I've decided to rebuild my 1996 Ford Explorer 5.0L (I was told it's a 4R70W)Tranny myself after getting an $1800-$2500 quote from a local shop. Not to name the shop...Ahem...AAmco...Ahem...
Anyways...
I found a "complete" rebuild kit on Ebay for $157+$15 shipping which is supposed to have everything I need, including steels, friction plates, seals(paper kit), front and rear bushings and overdrive band. It also came with a Transgo shiftkit. I also ordered the HD transmission cooler so the whole thing with shipping cost me $200. This seemed like a good price after shopping around for a few days.

I believe the truck has over 200k miles on it. The odometer was already stopped when I bought it from an action at 125k I put at least 40k on it my self.
I use the truck primarily to tow a 2000lb boat.

The tranny leaks really bad. The shop said it's leaking from both the front and rear. It also shutters while pulling the boat around 50mph as well as smokes like a fiend, but I'm guessing this might be from the tranny fluid being splattered everywhere and probably burning off.

Here are my questions:
Should I replace the torque converter at the same time? I found one at Advanced auto for $110 after discounts and free shipping etc, plus core charge.
Is there a torque converter seal that I need to replace or something that the kit may not come with?

Also, what about bearings inside the tranny and stuff like that, shouldn't these be replaced, or how do you check those? What should I look for as far as worn parts, etc?

I'm very mechanicaly inclined, but I've never attemted a tranny rebuild. I did get the ASTG manual and it makes it look pretty simple.

Is there anything you pro's out there can tell me or give me advice on before I start this job?

Thanks in advance!!

Replace the torque converter, and flush the cooling lines. Install an external filter. There are special tools that are used to install seals if you want to check EBay. They are made by Rotunda. Check the 4R70W rebuild sticky thread for more information.

Thanks BrooklynBay.

I would hate to ask this question but....Can you please post the link for that sticky you're talking about? I can't seem to find it.
