I want to service my Transmission on my 98 xlt with a sohc. What is the best way to go about doing this. I know if I drop the pan I will only get the fluid out of the pan. I want to make sure all of it is changed....

Since I don't have a lift, I'll be taking mine to a shop. I know this doesn't help you, but I'm wondering how easy it really is to do at home, also.

And is that so important?

How many miles on this puppy? When I dropped the pan on my 97 there was sediment. When I dropped the pan again a couple of months later, the filter was dirty again. New fluid will start to clean sediment out of the TC and clutch packs if you have gone longer than you should have. The 5R55E also has a history of blowing out valve body gaskets. I found all of the valve body bolts loose on mine and many others have reported the same. 7-8 ft-lb which is just a good twist. It might be that some of the sediment fills the gaps in the gasket and new fluid opens them up. Dropping the pan multiple times is a pain but it probably gets the transmission cleaner.

What I did is had a quick change oil place replace the trans fluid with their machine that takes out the old and puts in the new. They dont change the filter. So, when finished, I changed the filter. This was done at 56,000 miles and I have changed the filter every year(appx. 12,000) since then. Now have 108,000mi. I have, knock on wood, had no trans. problems.

I have 148,000 miles on my 91....haven't had anything done to the tranny or engine....i may need a tranny flush or something.

How difficult is it to change the filter yourself, I wonder? And, if the oil change place flushed/refilled the fluid for you, how were able to change the filter? I would think you'd do it at the same time like you do with an oil change?

If you haven't done anything with it, I wouldn't do much now. I definitely would not do the flush. At that milage your probably asking for trouble if you do.

They don't drop the pan when they do the flush, just disconnect the lines I believe, that's why no change of the filter.
