OK. I am new to this forum. I have an issue I have seached for quite a while now and am unable to find what I am looking for. I have an 06' 4.0 explorer Xlt. No mods, completely stock. 67k miles. Anyway while driving on Mountain grades the tranny shifts from one gear to the other like it should other than sometimes it shifts from 4th to 5th and has some vibration. Only between these two gears. Seems to do it more when I am in cruise control than just driving. Any cause of this other than pssoibly the tranny sliiping and going out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-

Can you explain the vibration, becuase if it was slipping usually the revs will jump then it will grab and jolt you forward.

It doesn't miss or feel like it is slipping. It just shutters between 4th and 5th gear. It doesn't slam, slip, or miss the gear. Just shutters or vibrates between 4th and 5th under a load.

I am a new member and I have exactly the same issue with my 4.0L XLT. As another symptom, mine spewed a couple of cups of trans fluid out of it last weekend while I was towing my trailer. I was running with O/D off and not going over 60 mph and 1/4 throttle. It was about a month after I had the transmission fluid changed and the first hot day I have towed on.

It started shuddering only after my fluid was changed and as I can't check it myself, I took it back to my local dealer and they said that the levels were fine.

In my case the feeling is a slight shudder with kind of a hunting feeling in the shift. Does this sound familiar, OP?

Problem Solved

Well, the issue kept getting worse. Soon when the transmission downshifted it would shudder. As well almost everytime it got hot, the problem would get worse.

I took the truck into a local transmission shop that is well respected and he had a look. This is what I was told;

The tranny fluid spitting out is a result of the fluid aerating in the transmission and coming out the overflow. The pulled the pan and there were lots of metal bits in the pan.

The shuddering is a result of the transmission fluid pressure dropping due to the filter getting plugged and dropping fluid levels.

Basically what had happened was that my overdrive planetary gear cluster had started to self destruct. It was walking back and forth in the case and doing a fair amount of damage. He called me in to show me what was happening.

I ended up having a complete rebuild done, including converter, and the truck runs great now. The shop owner did tell me that this is fairly commonplace with newer Explorers and it is so common that Ford is out of stock on the rebuild pieces and he had to source the parts out of the U.S.. The cause id trailer towing in O/D and also heavy loads with a lot of throttle in O/D.

I am pretty good about that kind of stuff, but I bought my truck after it was retired at National Car Rentals so I think its actually kind of cool and shows the basic design is pretty robust in that it made it 100,000 miles before I had any issues.

Eric,

May I ask what the rebuild set you back?

Thanks.
