Ok another thing. took my car into aamco. checked out tranny. they did a road test and said tranny feels ok and shift points feel good. they did not find any leaks but the fluid was low and then they checked transfer case and said fluid was over full. so they said they think the seal between the 2 went bad so the fluid is going between the 2? any ideas. they said they would have to pull transfer case and replace seal. how hard would that be to do? and does anyone think that would be the problem?

still need some help on this please. im not really buying the whole thing about fluid going back and forth between tranny and transfer case. NOTHING is leaking anywhere. think maybe i should just had a complete flush done or spend the bucks to have tranny really looked at?
well there a different problem with service engine light being on and they do free scans there. i did forget to mention that on friday the day before i took it to aamco the overdrive light came on and started blinking really fast and the display on the instraument panel said check tranny. once my wife got to where she was going and got in the car to come back the light never came back on and i have driven it in all types of ways from hills to flat, hard acceration to soft to try and get it to come back on before taking it to aamco but never came back on. if you break REALLY REALLY almost to point of kicking on ABS or corner sharp and fast tranny shifts into neatural and takes a while to kick back in gear. guy at aamco says its cuz fluid probably goes into transfer case cuzing fluid to be low in tranny.???????????

anybody got anything else on this?

Not trying to bust your hump, and folks here really try to be helpful, but your post is pretty inscrutable.

Can you start over with a description of the truck, engine and tranny combo, service over life, total miles, a description of the problem, and any facts you have to date.

People here are really helpful and there are no-kidding transmission experts here, but after a long day, it's pretty hard to sort out data from many posts.

No kidding, folks want to help.

Ok so the engine is a 4.0 not sure about tranny. has 132000 miles i bought at 96000 so not sure about all the service done on it. but when i took it into aamco for check engine light they checked out other things too. including transmission. i told them if you break really really hard. pretty to the point of kicking in ABS breaks the tranny shifts into nutrual and takes a little while to kick back in gear. so they checked fluid and said it was low. than the checked fluid inthe transfer case and said that was high. so they were saying there is a seal between the 2 that probably went bad so fluid was going between the 2. no fluid is leaking out anywhere. so i just dont really know what it could be????? was wondering if maybe just doing a filter and fluid change or a complete flush might help. any help on this would be great. sorry i gave as much detail as i can.

Okay 2002 Ex (Mountaineer) with 4.0 V6 and auto, should be the 5R55W tranny I think, now with 132K miles, but you bought it at 96K and don;t know the history.

You say that you took it to Aamco for a CEL, did they tell you what code(s) it threw? Did they reset the CEL or fix the problem or both (or neither)?

I will say that when shops do 'elective trouble searching' that they are often looking to generate work. Most tranny shops have one answer for everything - a tranny rebuild.

You say that if you brake very, very hard that the tranny goes to neutral and takes a while to go re-engage the gear. Is this the only problem that the tranny is showing?

I agree that the fluid going between the tranny and transfer case is very improbable.

I'm thinking that either Aamco does nto know how to check level on these, or that the previous check/refill was by someone that did not know what they were doing. No sings of leakage is a good indicator of no bad seals.

I say forget Aamco, and either check the levels yourself or have a real pro check them. Also, look at the fluid when you have this done. Note that checking level on the transfer case is easy, but is hard on the tranny. Start there and then go from there.

Did Aamco say that they adjusted the levels or did they just let it go? Did they say how low/high the levels were?

Looking back at your original post, you also had the flashing OD light - what codes did Aamco pull for that? Those are key to understanding the problem.

ok so the service engine light was on for probably a week or so before the whole o/d light blinking happened. o/d light blinking only happened once and has not happened again. when i took into aamco the scan came back as EGR flow resriction. nothing came back on the transmission. i replaced the EGR pressure sensor last week myself and reset the check engine light. and has not come on since so i think that was the problem with the check engine light. they didnt say how low the tranny fluid was or how overfull the transfer case was. they did top off the fluid to the tranny. so thats why i was thinking maybe if it had been changed before they just never filled it up all the way. thats where its hard cuz i dont know what all has been done before the 96000 miles when i got it. other than the stopping thing the tranny seems pretty good. SOMETIMES very rarly it feels like it might slip very little. so little its really hard to tell. so im just wondering if i dare do a complete flush on it. or maybe just filter and fluid? i just have read up alot on complete flush and alot of people say dont if you dont know if its been done before

If you are not having any problems, (other than the fluid appears to be over filled) i would not worry about it.. Aamco an other places like than don't always have the most knowledgeable employees and maybe they don't know what they're doing. it's probably fine.

if it fills the T-case up so much that it starts forcing fluid out of it somewhere then it's time to worry about it..

mercury mountaineer transfer case grinding

Sorry, but this is driving me crazy. I don't know the solution to this. My 4.0 v6 awd 2002 merc. mounty w/185k miles on it is making a grinding noise (NOT CLICKING) while turning steering wheel left or right. T.case was replaced w/112k miles on it and never changed fluid after. Replaced right cv axle assy and both wheel bearings lately. For some reason it stops grinding after the car has been idle for a day or so without driving, but after about 15 or 20 miles driving, the problem (grinding and noisy in the car) starts again. very annoying, because there are no problem lights on, on my dash, because I have a fully loaded vehicle. The under carriage of my car is spotless (no leaks or engine deposits) my oil change was done by ford/merc dealership 3 weeks ago. Don't want to buy a new t.case if not necessary. Can anyone help with this problem please, am a womam but know a little about cars.
