Ok, here is the story I no longer have 4wd it is a problem in the transfer case I am pretty sure. (happened awhile ago) so the other day I was driving home and went to over take someone and as I went to speed up the car seemed to just rev and not go any faster so I aborted the pass and pulled back in behind the car. as I eased off the gas the explorer seemed to kick back into gear, and I drove the rest of the way home gently. I pulled into my drive way which is a pretty steep hill maybe 70m long the car seemed to rev and do nothing, but then it started moving again. at the top of my drive way I tried to do a 3 point turn and when I went from Drive to Reverse the car would not move, so I tried going back to park then to drive and nothing so then I proceeded to try all the gears and nothing. I left it a day and tried it again I could feel the gear engaging but the car would not move. so I tried putting it in first gear and finally it jumped into gear (very harshly) and the car went forward I drove it up on some car ramps so i could get under it. and have left it there.

I have no engine lights on and no error codes showing.

ps about a week ago I had a bearing go in my belt tensioner which ended up melting my belt. I drove it about a block like that and then fixed that problem ie belt and tensioner pully

the problem must be in the transfer case or Transmission but where do I start?

I appreciate any advice/help anyone can give;)

First thing is to get it on a good scanner. Run of the mill scan tools might not read Ford transmission codes. Also might want to get a pressure gauge on it. With the slipping I would not think transfer case, although sounds like the 4WD system needs work also at some point. If you post back up, let us know the transmission mileage and service history.

the transmission was rebuilt about 50,000km ago and the resleeved one of the cylinders for the overdrive gear
I have not changed the fluid or adjusted the bands in that time.

(bump) please help car not running

The first thing I would check is the fluid level. Damn shame there is no dip stick.

A quick question, have you checked for any leaking of transmission fluid? Even a small leak over time will cause the fluid level to drop low enough to cause the problem you are having. There isn't a dip stick on these transmissions but if you are mechanically inclined it's pretty easy to check (lots of 'how to' info here and YouTube). At the mileage you are at a drain, filter and refill would be a good idea.

ok leveled the car warmed up the transmission, moved the gear selector through the gears and back in to park I did that a few times then undid the check fluid plug from the transmission, while the car was still running. The fluid poured out I would say the trany was overfilled it is a steady fast stream coming out I let it run for about 10 seconds with no indication it was going to slow down. I put the plug back in. Color of the fluid looked way more pink than red, but no burnt smell.

I will have a new filter and new ATF fluid tomorrow.

When I drop the trany pan off should I remove the solenoid block and attempt the repair as suggested in this video?

Check your coolant for trans fluid. It's possible your radiator has an internal leak and is pushing coolant into the transmission.

Yeah boomin pink fluid doesn't sound right.

This is not valid for a 3rd gen as they have a completely separate external transmission cooler.

Now that you mention it you are correct, I haven't seen any trans lines going to the radiator. I know the 2nd and 4th gen have it going into the radiator.

Still pink fluid doesn't seem right and I can't think of a reason it would be over filled. Other than when it had been last serviced.

Now that I think about it, I recall the transmission shop saying it would be alright if it was over filled as the trany has a breather and any excess fluid would just run out.

Sounds like you need a new transmission shop........ It is NOT good to overfill the trans and why would a shop would feel ok about fluid dripping out under your truck after a transmission rebuild is beyond me.

Can't go to a different shop only two in town and I have heard nothing good about the other one.

ok so tonight I tightened the bands OD and Intermediate. then started the explorer and waited for tranny to warm up waited till it got to 40c then put it in reverse with brake on and eased my foot off the break wheels not turn so I stepped on the accelerator and got very little movement from rear wheels. ( all wheels are off the ground) so then I tried Drive (D) gear and the wheels barely moved. so then i tried 3rd gear and the wheels would move same with second and 1st. put it back into Neutral and the transmission threw a code p1700 Transmission indeterminate failure (failed to Neutral)

any idea's on where to go from here?

UPDATE, P1700 error code

P1700 TRANS Transmission undetermined failure

Internal component failure. Direct one-way clutch failure.

Failed a neutral condition. FMEM becomes active — engine rpm limited to 4,000 rpms. No first, third or fourth gear in automatic mode. Other DTCs that may set P1700: P0745, P1747, P1760, P1714, P1715, P0750, P0755.

If other solenoid DTCs are present, diagnose and repair them first. CLEAR DTCs and drive vehicle. If P1700 returns, disassemble transmission and inspect the direct one-way clutch. Repair as required. CLEAR DTC. Drive vehicle and verify repair.

I guess the next step would be to drop the transmission pan.

If I remove the transmission from the car what would the bare necessities be to put back into the car? i.e. gaskets/seals etc.

Can I buy a Direct one-way clutch for the transmission?

Time for a full rebuild or replacement my friend, it sounds like its toast...
