I recently purchased a 95 Explorer for $700. for my 16 yr old. When I bought it I knew there was trans problems but I figured with a little work it was "do-able." When we loaded it on the trailor for the trip home we started it so the power steering and brakes would be usable. When I went to put it neutral for the push, the owner said it wasn't necessary because the trans was "free spinning." So we get it home, start it up and get ready to push it off but it wouldn't move. Had to put it in neutral to roll back.
To back up a little, the transmission was making a sound like baseball cards on a bike spoke only metal to metal. Neutal it stopped, drive pretty much kept clicking, park would get the bicycle slowing down sound and then stop.
So anyway, we were not for sure where we were to going to park it. So, as I was setting in the rig with the motor running figuring where to push it, I put it in gear and it worked, forward and reverse. Not wanting to take a chance we just moved it back and forth for a few days about 50 feet or so. Then the other day the trans went adios again. Same noise, no forward, no reverse. As I'm setting in it today contemplating, I engaged the 4-wheel low and was able to move it to it's "work spot."
What I do know from the VIN is it's a 95 Explorer XL, 4Speed Auto, Limited slip. Not sure of the exact trans yet.
QUSTION TIME? Why does it work in 4-wheel? I was thinking I could have messed up flex plate, could this still be the problem? The transmission dip stick shows that it is grossly overfilled, could this be a problem?
I know this a long story with wide open questions, sorry.
