I went to have my wheels rebalanced this morning. My truck was shaking so bad that i thought i'd thrown a weight.

My tires are old style BFG AllTerrain TA's mounted on deerfoot rims and no suspension mods (other than factory shock replacements @ appx 50K) The tires have about 24K on them. 50/50 - city/hwy driving miles.

i really don't off-road with my truck, so no major bounces or bumps.

here's what they found:
2 W & T's - Lf & Rr - normal out of balance stuff

but the other 2 were messed-up
Rf - off by 3.5oz's
and here's the REALLY SCARY PART !!!!!??!!???!!!
Lr - off by 2oz's AND the tread is seperating across the width <->

has anyone else experienced this ???

I've never heard of that happening on a BFG AT, especially at 24,000 miles. But I suppose it could happen to any tire. Sounds like some kind of defect or your alignment was grossly out of wack.

I've seen it on many brands of tire, of course they dont normally come apart like the Firestone's, but the seperation happens. Now you know what to look for....

I;ve seen it on Goodyears, and on the Price Club brand (cant remember the tire name)

tire defect is all i can think of - alignment is perfect, but they are out of warranty so i'm SOL

Running any tire at low pressures for an extended period of time could cause tread seperation. That is one possibility.

that exact thing happened to me with the old style bfg a/t's. the car was lurching up and down at low speeds. i am now on my spare waiting for 31x10.50's.

i also wonder if the tires are just old for age.... not driving on them could also cuase wear problems, mainly weather cracking and possible separation..... the old style ats have been out of production for a few years now.... but not to hate on the bfg, i have 31" kos on my truck and love them.... however, working in the tire industry, ALL tires can fail, not just firestones.... also, as mentioned befroe, improper pressurre can play a major part in cuasing damage.... are you sure the alignment is ok? it can LOOK ok but still be way out of whack... a goood alignment shop with the proper machines will be able to check it out for you
