That sucks... Im a huge XM fan, even though I personally dont have it at the moment. It was a future investment, but now Im going to wait it out and see what happens. I cant go throwing money into a new HU and reciever just to have it bomb out in the next year. Hmm....

OH! We couldn've predicted this, now could we! Read some threads about XM that where posted back in January sometime. You didn't actually thing this would catch on did you? Just like the MiniDisc was supposed to "revolutionize" the multimedia industry?

i agree. who would actually pay for to use a radio unless they are in the car for long periods of time everyday.

burn a cd and ya get the same thing for free!

Well if i had the money for the receiver i would get it, the monthly fee is very small. Burning CDs has a couple downsides to it. 1) its illegal (unless your just making a copy of a cd you have or a compilation of songs from CDs you have) and 2) you end up listening to the same songs over and over and over again. I have stopped using the cd player in my vehicle and now just listen to the normal am/fm radio.

I never really considered getting it, because like Digger says, a burnt cd does the same thing...oh well.

And there are a lot of folks just like that out there too.

I actually enjoy having to find music on the radio. It gives me a chance to listen to stuff I normally wouldn't listen to. Then again, I enjoy so many genres of music, it isn't that big of a deal to me. Having a "satellite" station that only plays your particular "brand" of music would be really boring IMHO.

and you are not limited to just one chanel/type of music.

I understand that Al, but I think that most people would tend to stick with "their brand" of music station(s). Example: A country music person would tend to only listen to the 24-hour, commercial free, country music station.

In my town, radios get just about 1 station of a few genres of music, so when a junky song, or a commercial comes on, it is a good oppurtunity to take a look at what else is playing.

My point: Normal radio forces you to take a listen to the variety of music out there.

Who didn't see this coming? Remember the Iridium Satellite Phone network? Nobody wanted it because there are better, cheaper alternatives. While the draw of XM radio does sound enticing at first, you are still listening to the radio. And why do people dislike listening to the radio? Because you almost never (unless you like Pop music) hear your favorite songs. Oh sure, the people who want to listen to the news all the time, or talk radio, may enjoy it. Even with XM, which plays your particular favorite genre of music, that does not mean that you'll get the number of songs you enjoy that you would get from a CD-R. For the XM radio monthly fee and cost of a receiver/antenna/whatever else you need to buy or install, you could easily burn CDs with audio tracks or MP3s that you would not get tired of, and hey, it still has great audio quality!

We have XM and love it. You can't even buy 1 CD for what it costs for a month of incredible service. I love listening to the massive variety of programming. Enough rock that I can always find something worth listening to, awesome unedited comedy channels, old time radio shows, reggae etc... I haven't listened to local FM stations in the past 3 months!

I do not have it but I am with Rick in that I love it. I have listened on a 12 hr road trip in a friends car.

I for one hope it flys.....

it is Sirius not XM that is having the biggest problems.

When this first came out Ithought no way will it last. When I attended training for both manufatures I still thought no way who is going to pay. Well sence it has come out I probably do 1 XM a month. Have not even done a Sirius set up yet.

I've got Sirius Satellite. It's a great service. It's annoying as hell (before I got it) when you drive home after work and everything you find is a commercial. Listening to one hour of music, you hear commercials about half the time.

I can listen to any kind of music I want and if I don't want to listen to that, turn on Fox News. The non-music programs are great and when you are out in the middle of nowhere and can't find anything on FM, you will always be able to listen to something with satellite. I haven't listened to FM in LONG time. Don't bash it 'til you've tried it.

As far as burning CD's, yeah, it's great, but you have to do it all the time if you want to have the new songs you want to hear.

As far as Sirius being worse off than XM, I'm not sure if I agree with that. XM's cash runs out in the first quarter of 2003. Sirius has enough right now to last until the end of the 2nd quarter. Sirius also has Audi, BMW, Mini Cooper, Daimler-Chrysler (Mercedes), Ford, Mazda, Aston Martin, Lincoln and Mercury on board. They also just picked up Sears as a retailer. In addition, they just redesigned their receiver chips. The new receivers will be credit card sized and about an inch thick. You can put it anywhere in your car and it will cost far less than the current receiver. Sirius also has 3 satellites in the air and no matter what, you will be able to receive a signal from at least 2. If they lose a satellite, the other two will suffice. XM only has 2 satellites, granted they have more repeaters. But if you are out of range of the satellite and a repeater, you'll lose the signal. With 2 satellites, this is a greater likelihood.

Yeah, I'm a little nervous as far as the future of the industry, but I think it will be able to hold. I should also note that I own shares of Sirius as well. I looked at both companies and Sirius seemed to have themselves well connected with other industries, so if they slip, they still have support. XM isn’t as well spread.

The only reason there was so much negativity on it in market reports recently is that the company made the slip and said "bankruptcy;" similar to saying divorce during a wedding. If the stock goes, I came in late enough that it wouldn’t be a hit for me.

It will be a shame if XM dosn't last. I have it in one of my cars and I miss it when I take the other. The variety is incredible. I listen to at least a dozen channels.

There are no babbling DJ's who think we are there to listen to them and not the music.

$10 a month is cheap. I wuld be glad to pay more.
