Hi, I just bought a 93 explorer 4x4 with the 5 spd manual transmission. The problem that I am having is that it will not move at all when placed in gear. It does'nt make any noise or anything when put in gear and the clutch released. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Typical problem with 4x4s is the transfer case. You can try putting the transfer case in 4wd and see if the vehicle will move that way.

I have tried that in 2wd, 4 hi and 4 lo with no success. I dropped the clutch in and out repeatedly while shifting gears and I got it to move just a little bit but nothing after that. I would think that if it was the transfer case that you would hear an obvious noise, but I hear nothing. Thanks.

Check the clutch through the clutch inspection port...you will need somebody to press the clutch pedal as you look in the bellhousing

Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder, if its dry you will need to add fluid and bleed the system, but it points to a slave cylinder leak

I suspect something in the clutch is FUBAR

Thanks for the quick responses. I will check out clutch through inspection port while it is being depressed. I did not notice any fluid leaking from the slave, and the resevoir is full, pedal is stiff and not spongy. Thanks again.

Yeah sounds like a clutch issue if it moves just a little

It was definately the clutch. After pulling the pressure plate off of the flywheel, I discovered there was absolutely no friction material on the clutch disc at all. The flywheel had some major wear and some slight checking, but it got turned and looks like new. Thanks for the help.
