Truck wont start

you mentioned inyour last post that the pump is not running? and you also say that the fuse and relay are okay. Have you actually checked the fuel cutoff or (inertia) switch for power with a test light?

with everything that has transpired this still sounds like a power problem meaning fuel.

air is not the problem as you have removed the inlet tube and also feel prussure out of the tailpipe when trying to start. correct?

spark is not the problem as you said you have checked that also. correct?

if you do not hear the fuel pump run for 2 seconds the instant you turn on the key to the run position,

then your problem is either
a. you have no power to the fuel pump (fuse, relay, cut wire, tripped inertia switch)
b. the pump has already burned out, has power but will not run

I still say get a new relay from the dealer and install.

a clogged fuel filter will not keep the fuel pump from making noise and running on the initial 2 second run when the key is turned on, however, the pressure created on the fuel system by a clogged fuel filter can cause the pump to work too hard and then burn out.
or not run.

good luck and keep us all posted

OK, its down to the pump, it does no 2 seconds start, and i disconnected the power to it and tested it, i got 7.5 volts on two connections, and 2.0 volts for the other. Are these right? And i got a new pump priced out with assembly for $182 canadian (instead of $274 from the mechanic). Is it reccomended that i pull the tank off the truck to install the new pump? Thanks.

I'm not sure about the voltage. Try a search. There is a thread about how to check the voltage and amperage to the pump. Also, where did you disconnect it?

YES, you will have to remove the tank to replace th pump. You will also need a fuel line disonnect tool. Try getting a Hayne's manual.

I would purchase just the pump for $80, rather than a pump assemply for $180. You can buy everything you need cheaper than the pump assembly.

Haynes manual, $20
Pump, $80
Filter, $8
Fuel line disconnect tool Set $10

And you have money left over for tools.

I have the haynes manual, and i can get the tools i need for free to loan (deal from the store), i would really prefer to get a new assembly, since its a $40 difference.

and just for the record, the pump is $144 here, and to get the assembly, its $40 more.

Also a new filter is right beside me, and the haynes book, and of course a bunch of ford pictures of cars, besides the point, its actually more expensive for me to get the new haynes book, filter, disconnect tool then it is just for the assembly and all the tools for free to use.

Sucess, kind of

I went with your advice lonestar and just got the pump, i found replaceing the pump the easiest part. We also replaced the filter, and damn it was a good feeling starting it up after a month of it being down.

So the fuel system seems to be good, however, im getting stuttering around 1000rpm and it idles funny. Could this be the catalytic convertors? (first guess)

You might want to run a can of Sea Foam through the motor. That stuff does amazing thing to rough motors. Its worth a try.

Good luck.....

Thanks.. i am lost between a few possibilities, and besides seafoam will help anyways.

My 1998 Sport 4.0 SOHC won't start either. This following a thorough washing of the engine compartment. Now it cranks like hell but won't fire at all.

Following the info from this forum, I've pretty much ruled out the coil module, and have dried everything I can find to stick a rag in. (Nothing seemed wet inside, BTW). I don't seem to be hearing the fuel pump running or even the relay click when I turn the ignition to Run, so I'm thinking (HOPING) it's the relay. I checked the inertia switch and it's not tripped.

Aldive or Shadow (or somebody): Can the fuel pump relay be tested, or is the best test just to invest in a new one and try it?

Hook up a pressure tester to the fuel port and see what the psig reads with the key on ( in the run position ).

Good luck.....

I found out my MAS is dirty again, im gonna get new star bits and take it off, then get some real bolts for it instead.

I've got to replace my fuel pump on my 1992 Ford Exploror so God helps us all.

help me

i put on a brand new fuel pump checked the relay and the fuses and switch and still wont start whats wrong

Check our fuel filter, even a little water or dirt will clog them up tight.
Also check your iac... Iv had the same problem if it gets dirty or decided to quit it wont run right if at all

Do you have spark?

It could possibly be the starter, or the alternator. You can call an auto parts store, and get a price on a part, and then call an automobile repair shop and see how much it would cost to get it fixed. First ask about if they provide the part, then ask how much if you provide the part. They aren't that difficult to repair though, especially on a little S10.

I think you are on the wrong forum, if you are working on a S10. just sayin! :D
