- 1995 Explorer 4wd 4.0
The 1995 Explorer that we have has had a top end rattle when accelerating and sometimes at idle. It has 244k on it and it appears to be leaking coolant on both sides of the engine between the heads and block. It has had this problem for as long as we have had it and this was back in 2007. I remember reading somewhere on here a while back that the OHV V6 in these were known to develop a rattle and what was causing it was the rocker arms would wear down the bottom side of the rocker arm shafts to the point that play would develop between the valves and the rocker arms after the lifters had fully extended. I know that the head gaskets are going to need to be replaced and I want to order everything that I will need to complete the job within a certain time but I don't want to buy unnecessary parts because I am limited to a budget of $400. The engine doesn't burn oil, it just leaks it and you have to keep adding coolant once a week. Is the camshaft also known to wear out? I priced one at rockauto for over $700.
Thanks,
Matt
