Hello everyone,
I'm joining this site due to my Mountaineer was stolen and I need help piecing back together. First thing would be the ignition switch. Are they easy to take out? I can't start it or even turn what's left of it to put it in gear to move it. I'll start there. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Very easy to remove, IF you can get the key in it and turn it out of the off position. Not sure if they can be removed without the ability to turn them.

Have you tried everything to get it to turn? If so, sorry, I can't help.

Good Luck!

Can't get the key in it to turn at all.

Okay, got the ignition lock out of the column, steering unlocked, can put it in gear, but it won't start? Is something i have to do to the theft deterent system? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Are you sure that you are using the correct PATS key? Are all of the fuses good? Are all of the components still there, the PATS module, anti-theft module, and plugged in? They are a matched set, along with the PCM. Are you sure that all of the parts are unchanged? Regards,

I really don't know. I talk to the dealer ship this morning and they said I would have to bring it in to ***** the damage.
I'm not familiar with Ford line of vehicles. I didn't see any cut wires,Fuses are good. I'm still at a loss. anything else information wise would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks again,
Bill

Okay Bill, I was asking for a general state of condition, etc. Do check the wiring in general, around the engine bay, and the left rear quarter panel. The modules are in there, and the PCM is in the firewall, behind the engine.

What does happen when you turn the key to on, and start? Do you hear the fuel pump turn on for a moment, every time that you turn the key to on? If the pump makes no noise, then start checking the fuel pump circuit. There is a marked relay under the hood, in the power distribution box. You can swap it for another one next to it, confirming that the relay is good(or both bad). There is an inertia switch which stops power upon an impact, or roll over. It is inside the right front cabin area, on the firewall, above where the passenger's feet set. To reset it, just push down on the top center. It has a red button which moves upward when the switch cuts off. Good luck,

Everything you mentioned, I checked. Looked good? The fuel pump makes no noise when I push the rod down the steering column. The ignition cylinder isn't there for the key to go in. As far as the relay goes, the owners manual was stolen from the vehicle. Why? I really don't know. I hope I can get to the bottom of this with a little more help.
Thanks again,
Bill

Are you turning the ignition key on? The PATS system requires the special coded key, to enable the ignition, including the fuel pump.

There's no ignition for the key to go into. But I do have the key.

ok, so how, exactly, are you trying to start it?
without the ignition, I would suspect you'd have to bypass the PATS system, which I'm sure wouldn't be easy/cheap, compared to replacing the ignition cylinder.

I'm turning it over by pushing down on the yellow colored rod that goes down the steering column. If I get a new ignition cylinder, would I have to replace the PATS and the other stuff mentioned? I would think the key would be different. Please let me know. Thanks for all the knowledge guys. I don't believe I would have gotten this far without it.

You will need an ignition key cylinder, to decode the key. The PATS module etc. won't need to be replaced, but they require the key code signal to allow engine operation.

I doubt Ford can provide a key cylinder to match your key, but you could ask. They will definately try to get you to pay for dealer reprogramming of an ignition to the PATS, and a different key. Ask a keysmith if they can make an ignition key cylinder for your key.

Likely you will have to buy a new ignition key cylinder, and have the PATS module reprogrammed to accept the key which comes with it, plus at least a second key. You might consider buying a key cylinder set, which would come with new matching cylinders for the doors, hatch, and glove box. Good luck,

to start the truck for now, put your key that worked before as close to the cylinder as possible, or, if you can, put it in the hole where the cylinder was, then try to start it, if the pats modual is working properly the truck will start unless something else is wrong, the pats works as a transmitter, not the key being in the actual cylinder, actually the cylinder has nothing to do with the pats, you should see a small ribbin cable attached to a plastic ring around the hole where the cylinder goes, thats the pats antenna, just get the head of the key as close to that as possible and if nothing else is wrong the truck will start.

The PATS is destroyed. They ripped the copper wire out of it. I tried putting it back in, but it didn't work. Thanks for the help. It's going to the dealer ship Friday. Hopefully she'll be back on the road by monday. Once again, thanks for all your knowledge and help with this matter.
Bill
P. S. Still looking for the parts to repair everything else that happened to it.
