Went back to it tonight to start removing the intake again... found a huge pool of oil under the truck... it's either oil or transmission fluid... :(

Suggestions would be great, thanks

Simon, I'm not sure how trans fluids leaked from this intake job. Depending on the amount of time it sat, the seals could have dried up and shrank, then leaked after running it. That does happen. Only way to repair that is a trans rebuild with a super master kit.

Now if it is an engine oil leak, this can def be related to the intake gasket / seal failure.

We discussed some of this elsewhere, but as I stated, the use of a good high temp, oil resistant RTV is needed. I wouldn't trust a rubber bead seal gasket alone, to save my life for this job. The Fel-Pro kits include a small tube of RTV, and it's not enough IMO. I used almost a complete large tube of Ultra-Black RTV with large beads front and back on the valleys and both sides of the lower intake gasket and completely around the water ports. Without using the RTV, I'm afraid the only recourse is to get another gasket, and do it over. Re-torque the lower intake again the next day, than finish installing the rest of the parts.

Here is the TSB for this job. They mention using a "Peanut" size amount of RTV, but I would apply a bit more liberally. The illustration show where to apply on the gasket. Get that intake on within 10-20 mins of applying the beads.

My moneys on oil. One or both of the valve covers at the back.

If the lower intake didn't go on square (We know it didn't, because of the coolant leaking), the valve covers wouldn't seal properly.
The valve cover's mating surface is both the head and the lower intake.

This time when the lower intake goes on, take your time and make sure its squares up against the 4 corners feeling the difference in heights between head and lower intake. Once that's squared, slowly tighten each LIM bolt in suggested sequence, increasing torque on each bolt slowly. We want that LIM to seat squarely.

ok, thanks guys... next stupid thing that I did.... I don't remember how I tightened them up... Is there a link to any instructions on here, or would the Haynes manual have something in it?

Just throwing this in because you seem to be in a rush, and it hasn't been suggested to wait overnight for the RTV to cure before filling the coolant and running the engine.

gmanpaint posted a link to a pdf that gives torque specs, and method of tightening bolts.

Also, waiting overnight and re-torqing really does make a difference. Even re-torqing after a few hours makes a difference. Its amazing how much the gaskets relax. This is another great tip.

Speaking of relaxing. Make sure you relax and take your time. Beer helps.

haha.I'm pretty highly strung right now... got a lot going on... (puppy going for a 3grand surgery today) deadlines with this truck, people on my ass all the time..

I'll take it apart and do it over... that way I'll have a clue...

Thankyou everyone for all the help you've given, once again, this forum is worth the small amount we pay in elite fees... I'm eternally grateful

wish we were closer. It would be fun to get together and put this ohv in its place. Be very careful installing the valve covers once the lim is seated properly. I had a ton of issues getting the valve covers to seat properly. Maybe even chase the valve cover bolt holes on the lim before installing it on your motor.

Yeah, that link I posted was for the illustrations. The Chilton manual I have gives the torque specs and sequence,. Figured the Haynes manual would have it as well.

Good luck Si!

gmanpaint, I have never seen the doc you posted. Its a good one.

I have had good success with the 40LIntakeGasketReplacement.pdf floating around the internet as its step by step with pretty colour pictures. Perfect for me.

looks perfect for me too.. .I shall head off to Napa and acquire some black goop and do that **** up properly tonight... can't wait to see it go to it's new home... :D
