my explorer has 157k and has never had any problems, but i decided to do some tune-up type things to maybe prevent it.

today we flushed the transmission completely and replaced the fluid obviously, took the IAC off and cleaned it really well, let the computer reset, put 1/2 can of seafoam in the oil, 1/2 in a tank of gas, put a full can through the brake booster hose into the top end of the motor, sprayed carb cleaner into the intake and cleand the mass air meter...

results: it idles, runs, shifts, and tachs lower.....im very happy with the performance of something that wasnt really "needed".

im going to order new spark plug wires, any certain brand i should get?

the spark plugs look brand new, but id consider new ones, what will work best?

what other small things should i do while im doing all of this?

How did you flush the tranny?

Motorcraft double platinum plugs will be the best, Any high quality wire should do you well; I use Jacobs.

at 157k you should replace the fuel filter for sure, thermostat, check the belt and belt tensioner. You should also look at the hub on your cooling fan for cracks.

Waterpump might be on its way out, you can do a visual inspection on that (look for leaks, wobbly fan shaft/pulley)

I agree with the Motocraft plugs and Ford wires are good too.

we cut a line for the transmission fluid, hooked a house to each part, added 1 gallon of transmission fluid. let it run and drained 1 gallon out. repeated this three times for a total of 3 gallons. at the end, just sat still and shifted to each gear a couple of times, checked it......did the same a couple more times whil echecking it, but adding 3 gallons, but filling the same bottles with the "old fluid", we were able to keep the correct amount of fluid in the system. we then put a hose over the cut line, clamped it on, and made sure it wasnt leaking.

alright fuel filter and thermostat have been added to the lit and check everything for leaks (of course)

i was thinking of going e-fan just to take the strain off of the motor and gain a few miles a gallon.......what should i look for in a quality e-fan?

the search button

You should have droppe dhte pan and changed the filter too, do that next time.
I am not trying to be mean but your E fan questions and others you can easily find out all about the solutions using the search button. IN Fact Aldive has an entire thread devoted just to the E fan :)

problem with searching: recent discoveries may have proved it wrong....there's people around now that may not have been around in old threads with input...

so why not ask? it is a forum, not a database right?

410 fortune......thanks for your help....

i did so some searching, and it's very helpful, thanks.

been looking around on partsamerica.com and summitracing....

of course i can order the ford spark plug wires from ford, but would anyone else have them cheaper?

i cant find the magnecore double platinum spark plugs....where can they be purchased?

thanks.

Magnacor makes spark plugs? I was just about to suggest that you buy Magnacor wires, through Car Freaks. They are the best wires. Don't buy them if you will be selling the vehicle within 100,000 miles though. Good luck,
