I got a buddy that has a diablo trinity t1000 for his impala. It has the capability of tuning many vehicles including the explorer and the ranger. Problem is the year. They range from 2006 - 2010. I feel like it could work but I don't know if it could accept it or not.

email the manufacturer. i was looking for some power upgrades because i plan on buying a small boat to pull around. i need more power so i am looking into getting a catback system and a tuner. i wasinterested in the superchips tuner but ive always been on the fence about tuners so i emailed superchips with a few questions. turns out they dont make a tuner fully compatable with sport tracs. just email the manufacturer of any tuner youre interested in, im sure they will get back to you with good info. right now, im looking into the x cal tuner that a lot off members have been using.

Well the reason why I'm so interested in this tuner is because he can give me a really good deal on it plus it's a windshield mounted system and can monitor anything and everything I want it to monitor.

Why is you're buddy giving you such a good deal on his tuner? Just be aware, most aftermarket tuners "lock" to the vehicle they are used on. In other words, if he tuned his Impala with it, the device can NOT be used to tune any other vehicle, unless the Imapla is first returned to stock using the tuner (the "tune" removed from the ecm).

While many manufactures will "unlock" a used device, they will charge a fee for doing it. In most cases the fee is almost as much as just buying a new tuner. Plus, you would have support and a warranty with a new device.

The defacto "official" tuning solution on this board is the SCT xcal3 (or some of there newer models- including touchscreen dash mount models), with custom tuning from James Henson (Henson Performance). Do some research, and you'll find that nearly everybody who has his tunes is very happy with them, and they are much better than any "canned" tuned that is "built-in" to a tuner device.

he got his impala professionally tuned not too long ago and just has it sitting around his house collecting dust for the most part. so to clarify, he doesn't have any tunes off of this device anymore. they say the tuner hooks up to the obd2 port and you enter your specs for your vehicle, basically sensing that its hooked up to a different vehicle. after that, it resets the tuner for your vehicle and gives you the tunes for your vehicle. I'm just wondering if the year of the truck really makes a difference. if it doesnt work then oh well, i just dont wanna plug the thing up and it just not work, or work and do something bad....

I would bet that a tuner for 2006-2010 tracs will not work with 1st gen tracs... the ECUs are different, and the 2nd gens also had a v8 option so Im not entirely sure how the tuner could work with both a v6 and v8...

but regardless the 1st and 2nd gen 4.0L's are not 100% alike.

I can understand them being different but I just don't see why it wouldn't work. Like I'm wondering if its just the sheer age? I just don't see why not. Plus we had the adrenaline model 1st gen which wa a v8.

Nah that wasn't a v8 was it? I could be wrong but I'm 99% sure it was the same old 4.0. Just other goodies

ALL factory Gen 1 ST's used the 4.0L SOHC V6.

Anyway, a tuner tells the ECU to do different things with the engine valves and injectors (or so I understand it to be), so if the 2nd gen engines are different than the 1st gen, the code used to tell the ECUs what to do would be different. Like I couldnt use a tuner for a v6 mustang on my explorer even tho they are both 4.0L SOHC. It would lock up my ECU and my vehicle would cease to funtion

Sorry to be the Debbie downer. I had the same idea when my buddy had one for his ranger. It was an xcal 2, and I talked to torrie on mySt and learned that way.

It may be just sitting there but it wont work on anything but his Impala until he returns it to stock. That's just how he tuners work unfortunately. Basically if it's not "unlocked" its an expensive paperweight.
