How to: U-joint removal and replace-how to with pics

Prefix for threads which are instructional.
I know this thread is from some time ago, but it was helpful to me. I just wanted to add that SUPPOSEDLY there is a special tool you can get from Autozone to help take out and put in the U-Joints -- I was unaware of this when I started the job so I decided to go on without it -- PLEASE GET THE TOOL!!!!! I had hell with my job, both off AND on! Having to hammer the caps on makes the pins fall out!!!!!!

If you try to press in 2 caps at the same time (even with the tool) you risk the pins falling inside a cap and being crushed/snapped. I learned the hard way and only press in one cap at a time.

I got my rear shaft u-joints installed today with help from this thread... and a phone call to Turdle (thanks again). One note to add, once the bolts are out, and it is held up only by rust and habit, don't lay under it. Mine fell out but was saved from damage by landing on my nose! LOL (Yes, obscenities were uttered...)

About how long should this job take?

This will depend, but it will take less time the second time you do it.

Let's say 1, maybe 1.5 hour per joint for your first time. It will probably go a lot faster though.

Good to know. I might just drop it off at my friend's shop, but we'll see. Do most people replace all 3 at same time or just as needed?

Once again, it depends.
Sme folks stick to a tight budget, others don't want to pull the drive shaft twice.

Once you get the driveshaft out you will know. If the u joint will not support the flange weight without allowing the flange to drop , I would replace it.

Makes sense....thanks.

I just want to add to make sure to wear safety glasses for removing the snap rings from the u-joint.

A few years ago one of the guys at work was using the needle nose pliers like Jon when they slipped and poked him in the eye causing him to loose it. :(
OMG... To LOSE an eye, especially when one is not wearing safety glasses... That sucks!! ☹️

That is tragic.

Stay safe!
