alright. it will soon be obvious that i'm no genius. somebody please break the ice for me. i - i need to hear the bad news from somebody before the mechanic tells me tomorrow.

here's what happened:

i'm in 4 hi, in neutral, i revved up to 1500, put it in drive, and ........ a noise (a crack, or a thud). truck is still. engine still running. no gears forward or back, in 2 or 4

is it u joint?

is it drive shaft?

is it t-case or tranny?

***if somebody knows what this is, what about costs?

My guess is the tranny. You should never, ever rev the engine before putting the truck in gear. These trannies are especially fragile as well. If it does turn out to be the tranny it will likely need a full rebuild. 1000-1500 for a cheapo job and closer to 2000-2500 for someone who knows what they're doing and uses brand new quality parts and does all the updates.

You probably fragged the flexplate, torque converter, tail shaft or output shaft, or worst case: something in the main portion of the tranny.

Just to add, if it was anything farther back at least one axle should still work. And I doubt it was the tcase.

thats what i expected.

just my luck. i just bought bigger tires (31's) and was hitting a little mudhole on my way home. typical.

anyways, since i have never done this before can i assume my that options are:

-have rebuilt tranny installed
-have used tranny installed
-have mine rebuilt

has anyone experience with any of these, and perhaps incurred costs for parts.

i was just looking at an a4ld w/ 65k for like $900 shipped

is that a good price?

how many hours labor for tranny switch out?

i have seen rebuilt a4lds on e-bay for under 700, wth warranty...i heard this one place that sells on there from pheonix was pretty good but i have never bought one online...it was just a thought that you might be able to get a fresh one for the same price as a used one, but you would still have to worry about installation.

btw, even though you were only at 1500 rpm, never ever neutral slam an auto.

sound like when i neutral dropped my aerostar.... that killed the car....... from what i have heard, in a tranny's life, you can nuetral drop it 3 times... well, that aerostar did it 4, and then go bye-bye....... if you think about it, drag cars do it, but they were set up to be able to do it... the whole transbrake and such......

okay, so if these trannies are so fragile then somebody has to be able to tell me what they paid when theirs went out for the dirt nap. how many hours labor for rebuilding mine vs.
hours for install of used/rebuilt tranny (if i buy one)

thanks

also, is it lame to consider putting in a manual shift
i know i'd have to add clutch and all that....

just asking

if i had a price, i'd give it to ya but it was done before i even touched it and i havent seen the paperwork (girlfriends parents had it replaced a few years before i met her....and the a4ld)

I think mine was $2400 to get fully updated and rebuilt.

i just visited my x at the tranny shop.

the guy told me this:

1. output shaft broke clean in two (i saw the pieces)
2. all other parts look pretty good
3. says complete rebuild is not necessary

he's going to nickel and dime me on all the seals and gaskets, but says his parts guy probably has the shaft.
claims he can have it running again tomorrow for around $500. my wallet is telling me its a good idea.

what about you?

What do you mean by "fully updated?" I have a 2000 4x4 Sport, is my tranny fully updated by that model year?

i was wondering if that would happen if i did that, sorry for you, but im glad you found out for me.

we had ours done for 1300 can, just a basic cheapo job tho
