Ultimate makes some nice SQ subwoofers. they do really well with rock music. for some reason they dont do well with booming bass like rap/hip hop.
i havent heard the speaker you mentioned, but i'm sure it is a good subwoofer. if you want something a little more vesatile, try Earthquake. they have very similar performance, but Earthquake does pretty well in all types of music.

leejen,
i respect your suggestions..you know your ****!!

however i'm on a limited bugjet, (i'm in college just trying to get a good system up and going) not too loud but nice. I am already planning on buying a rockford fosgate punch 400 so what do you think would sound really good running off that???

i wanan spend less than 100 per sub if possible.
earthquakes are kinda pricey.

i understand the budget thing (i have a wife, daughter, and another baby due in January).

how many watts did the punch 400 put out a 4 ohms mono? i cant find my spec sheets for the older rockfords...

leejen,
lets see

into the fosgate punch 400 4 channel, I'd bridge it for 2 subs.
puts 200 W X 2 @ 4 Ohms RMS
which is seriuosly underrated...the total power of this amp is 600 watts...so rms power is more like 250 per channel bridged.

let me know what you think
i can get the punch 4 which i think is a great amp..for a reasonable price...thats why i want it.

but what can i run and have sound good, but be kinda loud.

oh, you meant the 400.4 amp. i was thinking a 2 channel amp...

you could get a pair of Orion XTR's. they are really good SQ subs, and they hit really hard. last year the European DB record was set with eight 10" XTR's.

the zeb sells them cheaper then anyone else i've ever seen.
or if you lived closer, i could sell you two XTR 15's with the box (i'm slowly building a new system).

orion you say is another choice?

i see.
so you think that ultimate is a good company?
and orion is a great subwoofer?
i haven't heard alot of good things about them...not alot of bad though.

hmm i see,
i was also considering cerwin vega hed series 12's

i don't know.
if you had to pick between cerwin vega hed series and ultimate subwoofers which one would you do...they run about the same price.

only differnce is that the ultimate holds alittle more power. with higher DB rating.

the ultimates are very good, but out of the two that you mentioned, it's a tough choice....
the HED's are a big improvement over the previous cerwin vegas.....
Ultimate is a respectable brand with good sound quality....

i would probably pick the HED's since they are not as limited as the Ultimates...

about orion. you dont hear much about orion outside of the competitions. they were the first to offer high current amplifiers (the HCCA series). and their amps are still one of the best around (stable down to .25 ohm mono). their subwoofers are great too (actually Earthquake subs are basically the same thing [kinda like the ford explorer and mercury mountaineer]). the Earthquake DBX12 is built on the same cast aluminum basket, and has the same cone and surround as the Orion HCCA 12D. they even have dual 2 ohm voice coils, and the same connectors. the only difference is that the Orion HCCA handles 600 watts RMS and the Earthquake DBX only handles 400 watts RMS.

leejen when you say "i would probably pick the HED's since they are not as limited as the Ultimates..." what do you mean by this statement???

maybe i shouldn't have made that statement as i have never heard the model of Ultimates that you are referring to. but what i meant was how Ultimate subwoofers (in general) have a problem accurately producing boomy electronic bass (like in rap/hip hop/techno etc...). but the HED's sound good all around. they're probably the best bang for the buck.
of course these Ultimate's might be totally different than all of the other models and might be great with all music.

like i said, either one will be a great choice. but i just think the HED is a more "capable" or "versatile" subwoofer (but this is only going by past experiences with Ultimate). if all you listen to is rock (or similar genre), then the Ultimate's will be perfect. like i said, they are great SQ subs. but lack in the hard hitting boom of synthesized music..

ok thanks for your help i'll probably just stick with my idea for the cerwin vegas..
thanks!
