Underhood Fuel Smell and Where oh where is the evap canisitor located?

Help.... that aweful raw fuel smell is driving me nuts.

I see from another thread thatt the problem is possibly the evap canisitor and valve.

My problem is I have no clue as to its location on my 99 XLT 4 door. Any ideas?

Thanks,,,,

Can you be a bit more specific? Is it frame mounted?

Thanks....

On my 92 its in the engine compartment. Typically its a black can looking thing thats just in there somewhere. I have never heard if it being back by the spare tire before.

its in between your body and your spare tire hope this helps man

Another thing dont replace the evap cannister it will get aired out most of the way after you get the system working properly. You can get some of the bad smell out by sticking an air blow gun in the can and carefully blow fresh air in . Just pull off the small caps. Be careful, it is possible and it does happen that you will get a face full of raw fuel smell.

like bryan said, just need to replace the purge silenoid (about $26) no need to replace canister, it will just be a waste of money

Did replacing this valve "fix" the smell problems?

That insidious smell is driving me crazy...

Dir replacing these valves do the trick and solve the stinch?

its worked for me and others on this board, and i havent had the smell for over 30k miles

After searching high and low, front and back, I cannot fina an evap canist. anywhere.

I took my 99 to an excellent mechanic today and asked him where my canist was located.

He said sure and opened the hood, pocked around for 5 min and said he didn't see it anywhere. He then crawled under the truck and looked, again, no canist.

This is getting really OLD. I do not want to take it to Ford.

HELP again please. Where the heck is the canist?

Is it possible there is not one? Then what about the gas smell?

Sounds like my EX. What can we do to fix it?

GAS SMELL

I have ordered a cannister purge valve from NAPA part number 2-28205. There is no solenoid that controls this valve. I might have gave some wrong info. before sorry. Ford dealer gave me a pict. of the fuel evap system, and a price of 109.73 for the valve. A friend at NAPA crossed the ford number and came up with a part number and it is about 15dollars. I will let you know if it is correct and fixes the problem. NAPA has a pict. of the valve and it appears to be the same. This valves job is to pull out the fuel vapors from the cannister. hope this helps .

And where does it hide?

cannister

the cannister is most likely not the problem. It is full of fuel vapors and raw fuel due to another problem. It is not getting cleaned out . But for the hell of it on my 94 it is on the drivers fender , kind of oblong, plastic container. Also if you are looking for it just follow the lines from the gas tank at least one of them runs to it ,as a vent.

location of valve

The ford drawing shows it coming off of the cannister right after a 90degree elbow. the 90degree elbow is coming off of the top of the cannister. But I think on my 94 I have found it laying on the lower intake . Barely visible from the passengers side.

I have picked up the part and it looks like the right one. I will put it on and let you know what happens. see ya , Bryan H

Still no fuel smell the valve must be working.

Same here. No more fuel smell after replacing the purge valve back in April. $20 at NAPA and five minutes to swap it in. Thanks Bryan!

peace

Mike

Great news.

Please explain how you replaced the valve. Pics if any would be great.

Thanks...

Hey Al

No pics, although I doubt they would help since mine is a 92 and yours is a 99. The purge valve is about the size and shape of a roll of quarters, with a T-connector on the top and an electrical connection on the bottom. First thing I did was go to the library and xerox the pages in the Chilton manual that showed the location of the canister and the valve. In my car, the valve was just six inches away from the canister, on the driver's side of the car, right near the radiator, so replacement was a piece of cake. I just unhooked the electrical connection, pulled the vacuum lines off the T-connector, took the old valve out, and installed the new one. Took me longer to drive to NAPA to get it than it took me to replace it. Good luck with yours, does it still stink of gas?

peace

Mike
