Unique Things about the X

Just curious what do you guys think is Unique about the explorer? why do so many people own one? why do they last so long? why does it suck up so much gas?

It's built FORD TOUGH

Not many stock SUV's that you can take down trails and bumpy gravel roads and not produce a rattle that will annoy you the rest of the time you own the vehicle.
Not many (if any) stock SUV's that come with a stonger set of axles.
It's one of the roomiest and most comfortable SUV- making it great for everyday driving too. You'de have serious back problems if you had to ride in my old Nissan Pathfinder for more than 2 hours and not have a break.
I'm not sure how it compares to other stock SUV's, but I think the brakes are incredable.
It just looks awesome

The #1 reason why: go test drive all the other SUV's in its class and see which one you think is the best! I have driven Blazers, Xterras, Toyotas and none of them compare to the Explorer. The Blazer is flat worthless and the Xterra is gutless. The Toyota is a decent vehicle until you figure in the cost to maintain one (vs. the Explorer) and it isn't worth owning.

They're by far the best SUV for the price on the market. Roomy, tough, good quality, and the price won't kill you.

Three words: Built Ford Tough.

out of all the suv's ive drivin the explorer is by far the mosr comfertable and looks the best. it has alot of power and drives more like a truck then all the others.

I'd pretty much echo the others.

It's almost half the price of a 4-Runner (the ONLY other SUV I'd own), and has more power and TONS more room.

Testimonial:
More than once, I've hauled a full size washer AND dryer in the back and didn't even have to move my tool box (strapped to the D-rings in back). I DARE you to try that with a J**P.

It's the ONLY SUV out there that has that kind of room inside and is still slim looking outside, (slim enough to lead the J**Ps up narrow trails ) AND has the power to get you up some nasty, rocky, high-altitude trails.

A buddy of mine has been SUV shopping and I was amazed at some of those rice-burners. Some have gears ratios around 1.88:1, with 2-3 liter engines. That would NOT get the job done up here in Colorado.

i gave up fighting with them. re-building the tranny and changing the drive shafts, cross members, and rear end at 18k miles kinda discouraged me although it made a huge improvement. the car has been sitting in the garage since i got the VW in june and it will probably stay there untill the lease is up. i needed a car to get me to NY for the summer so i practically stole a VR6 which i am enjoying very much. my sister is moving down here (Boca) from Brooklyn in a few weeks and she just had a baby recently. she drives a mustang GT and a baby seat doesnt fit too well in a convertable so at least the car will get some use. eh, what are yah gonna do?

did you ever get your new car? if so what did you decide on?

my friend owns a blazer S10. Although mine looks better, rides better, and holds up better, his still has 195 horses out of a V6.. and I have 160

Mike Boyle is right. I drove them all too in 1993 and none compared to the Explorer. I was pulling a very large pop-up trailer at the time with a full size Chevy station wagon with a 350 engine. On long grades around Austin and San Antonio, it would barely maintain 50 mph with the A/C on, loaded, with wife and kids. Same load and trailer with the Explorer, I could accelerate up the same grades. (3.73 LS axle and trailer towing package) The early Explorers generate all of their torque at a low 2400 RPM, rather than 3000-4000 RPM like some SUVS. When it comes to hard pulling, useable torque is most important! Mike
