First, thanks to all of you who helped with their suggestions during my rebuild ordeal.
The vibration I described turned out to be a bad rear U-joint. I replaced the valve body Friday night and the transmission is working perfectly, but the vibration was still there. On Saturday I decided to try 4WD just to see what would happen. Sure enough, the vibration changed. When I grabbed the driveshaft I could move the rear U-joint. WHen I took it apart there was nothing left but black dust in one of the caps.
Nothing is ever easy. I replaced both U-joints in the rear drive shaft. While re-assembling the rear one I noticed a loose sloppy fit for the caps in the yoke that bolts to the rear. They are so loose I can remove them with hand pressure.
So now I need the rear yoke. Does anyone have one laying around that they would be willing to part with?
Please email me at d.denton@verizon.net. Thanks!!
