Urban legend or not: Self-burned CDs damage CD players?

My bro-in-law advised me not to use my self-burned CDs because they would destroy the CD player at long term. True or false? His CD player went out and he blamed the "pirate-copies" for it.

My guess is that this is false, but I'm not an audio freak and obviously have no clue

It's BS. A CD player uses a laser to look at the surface of the disk and read the info. There is no physical contact (except for the CD sitting in the tray) between the mechanism that reads the CD and the CD itself. There is no way that the laser can read something that damages the machine.

There are 2 ways I can think of a CD damaging the machine:

1) a really dirty CD can contaminate parts of the reader and
2) an unbalanced CD can throw a player out of whack. I've had some unbalanced CDs (mostly factory ones actually, not burned) tick inside CD players.

whateva cd playa Volkswagen puts in their cars the one the frontpart fells off so it does not get stolen

And about Shakira: I really like her voice, very unique. I like her Spanish songs way better than what she did in English. And yes, she's also not too ugly, specially before she turned blond.
