Just bought a '92 xlt for a work vehicle. Took it to get inspected so I can get it titled and Licensed but it failed.

I don't know squat about cars but my dad does, so bear in mind I don't have to much of a clue, but I'd like to try and fix this stuff myself seeing how I don't have much money to put into it right now.

(Question 1)

Ok when I bought the truck I knew something was up with the brakes, the guy said the rear breaks or break control needs to be adjusted, but when I took it to get inspected they said it was the master cylinder. At low speeds the petal sinks to the floor to stop and and higher (over 40) it kinda vibrates like I have uneven rotors or something. Also when I had to slam on the brakes it jerked to the left.

Is all of that related to the master cylinder? I checked the fluid lvl and it's full.

(Question 2)

The push button 4x4 doesn't work, from what I read on the trans page here, a click followed by another 3 secs later can probably be fixed by realigning the control motor, but I tried it again yesterday and it didn't even click. Is there something beside the motor that can go wrong?

(Question 3)

When I bought it the guy showed me that there was a vacuum hose that he never reconnected because he couldn't find where it went. I'm wondering from another article I read if this could have anything to do with the transmission fliud *disappering* , is it going in the oil as the article suggested ? I'll try and take a picture of it to help out. I figured it was for the cruise control because that doesn't work.

Also kinda the same question but I have to put some transmission fluid in every week or so according to the previous owner, what could be the cause of this if not whats listed above? It doesn't leak on the ground just kinda disappers.

(Question 4)

There's a high pitched whine coming from the truck I think it might be coming from the fuel pump. What might it be? My dad can't hear it at all due to working in a body shop most his life, so it's decently high pitched, it kinda sounds like maybe a vacuum hose isn't on all the way or air getting sucked into something. The previous owner replaced it with a used fuel pump and soon after the gas gauge stopped working. I'm kinda wondering if the fuel pump isn't sealed right or something. I assume it's in the tank? It also died one while idling after it had been warmed up pretty good, I though that might also be realated or maybe it's just the filter?

Thanks for any help, my dad's gone for a couple weeks and I need to get this titled within 20 days or the fines start adding up so I'm trying to figure out what parts I might need and what they cost so when he does get back we can hopefully get this knocked out or at least give him some other idea's he might not think of.

Oh yea and the picture of the vacuum hoses...

for question 2... have someone sit in the back when you hit the 4x4 button... I didnt hear the click till i sat in the back and had someone else push it

For Q1, it sounds like you need a master cylinder, AND the front rotors are warped. If the rotors have never been turned, you may be able to get away with just turning them instead of replacing them. What did the inspection station say?

Q2. Try what JStrider said although on mine I can here the clicks in the front. If you still hear nothing then that means the 4wd computer (located in left rear wheel well past the jack) is either not receiving the signal from the push buttons or the computer is toast. I wouldn't worry about this yet as it shouldn't be a requirement for licensing.

Q3. It is probably not going into the oil (it would be overfilling the oil if it was, check the engine oil dipstick level). It could possibly be going into the coolant but once again you would notice that as well. If you don't see any signs of a fluid leak even during or after running then it could be a faulty vacuum modulator. It costs $20 and is easily fixed here is a link with much more info. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135418&highlight=transmission+leak
As with Q2, don't worry too much about that now concentrate on Q1 as that is what is keeping it off the road.

I checked my '93 and my vaccum tree looks nothing like yours so the bolt filled line is still a mystery.

vacumm tubes
i looked in my 93 xlt and my vaccum tree is different also... need to have someone with a 92 xlt look at theirs.
its possible somewhere along the line someone may have done something weird to yours...

There's a vacuum diagram under the hood, I compared it to the diagrams I found of '94's on the autozone website and it's not the same.

I tried taking a picture of it tonight so you could all see the diagram, but the flash and glossy paper make it impossible, I'll have to wait for daytime.

Q2 I'm not to conserned about , I jsut threw it in there to get your opinion on it. I just want to get it fixed before winter. Also I tried it again today and there was a clicking so I think I'm good there.

This vaccuum modulator, could that be what the tube isn't hooked-up to? Or would it not work at all then?

And to kinda list it I could have a hose leak while driving but not while it's sitting there. The diaphragm could be bad, and the vaccuum modulator could be bad, are those the possibilities for the trans fluid?

Thanks again, this is an awesome community driven forum you guys have.

The vacum modulator is most likely hooked up if it is upshifting OK without it revving up to high before it shifts. As for the vacum line I will probably be in Springfield one day this week to go to Bass Pro,if you wanted to meet me somewhere you can look at my 92 and see if we can figure it out.

Sure any time after 4 pm on weekdays, or whenever on Saturday.

Let me know the day and time.

OK,I don't know yet what day I will get up there,I was counting on a rain day but I don't know if it will happen. It was supposed to rain all week but you know how that goes.I'll let you know ahead of time.
