Tried used oil analysis on my f-150:
2000 F-150, 4.6 litre engine.
Oil is Ultramar "extreme 100% synthetic" (yeah, I know, not PAO)
Kms on engine: 95987
kms on oil: 5001

Fe 7
Cr 0
Mo 8
Al 2
Cu 1
Pb 1
Sn 0
Si 13
Na 3
Zn 639
K 1
Ni 0
Ag 0

No numbers for TBN or oxydation were given.
This test cost me $16 plus tax, hard to say if it was worth it

what do thise numbers mean and for that matter what do the letters mean.

Written in the evaluation:

" test results are considered normal for this compartment. No excessive wear is indicated at this time. Continue to monitor by sampling at the recommended interval. More data needed to to form wear trend"

Those are the elemental names for all the various metals and other elements that are found and can be found in oil, different metals mean different potential trouble ahead, or excessive wear, I dont know what means what though. eg..iron, chromium, molybdenum...silver, though I dont know how silver gets in an engine, probably in some cmpd.

Oh yeah, I should be getting a test kit from black..something labs for a UOA test, Ill post...its a 134k, not major problems or rebuilds yet, be interesting to see what they say.

Interesting. I don't really see any point if you're engine's running fine, though not too bad of a price.

Here is one of the Blackstone Labs results sheet. Hop you can read it.

I just don't understand these oil tests and what you do with them. For example, if the zink or silver content or viscosity was too high what would you do? In fact, what would do if any of these were out of wack? Change oils? Rebuild your engine?

They claim that certain elements, or traces of these metals in the oil can mean excessice wear or show that a rebuild is coming up, if you look at this Dead Link Removed it explains how it can let you know ahead of time of problems, etc. no idea how often they're correct, for the price it seems good to me, and just worth it for kicks.

I use them for trend analysis. If the levels stay the same, then all is good. If something changes, Blackstone will tell you what they suspect the elevated levels are from, ie bearings etc. then you can decide what to do about it.

Also, I go extended intervals between changes. The last interval was 10,000 miles. Blackstone recommended an oil change with the last sample I sent because the oil had gone even higher in viscosity and the TBN was getting low.

Various internal parts have certain elements in them which wear off. Bearings will wear away certain elements which can be seen in an oil analysis. The same goes for other parts like rings, valve guides, etc.

Watching the change in metals which indicate high wear of certain parts can suggest a rebuild. It's possible to see a serious need for head work, and avoid doing more major rebuilding.

An oil analysis ( UOA ) performed at regular intervals will definitely show trends in the "life" of your engine.

I find it unbelievable that so many auto enthusiasts on this board and other boards of the same ilk, still think that oil needs to be changed at 3k miles.

There is no way to know when your oil needs to be changed without a UOA.

The price is reasonable, however, I personally want to see a TBN performed with any UOA.

I got a TBN performed with an LBO and it was ungodly expensive.

Thanks Al, your bypass project reminded me that I have a remote filter somewhere that I should use. It was the original Oberg filter, with a single stainless screen. It leaked slightly at one of the large fittings, so I removed it. I later had a plate made for it, and it has two screens in it now.

I should fix the leak, and figure out how to use it for my 99 mail vehicle. It wouldn't be bad to use if the oil wasn't changed but once or twice a year.

I made it up :p
