The "upgrade" alt on the '04 Ranger is both a 115A and 130A, so it might be either.

The only easily replaceable brushes on these are the ones behind the voltage regulator.
It actually uses the same voltage regulator (Motorcraft #GR821) and brush assembly as the 91-97 3G.

Unfortunately, Rockauto sells it for $50+.

You can just buy the brush assembly for a 91-97 though:

They are only about $10. You can get them at auto parts stores too, not sure if the pricing is decent or not though. Be very, very careful when removing the voltage regulator and replacing the brushes. I apparently fried mine with static or something and it no longer worked after replacing the brushes.

the problem was it wasnt charging anymore. is that just the brushes? or would the regulator be involved?

and im guessing ACDELCO Part # F709 from the link you provided?

really the only other thing, is the wireharness from my 91 gonna plug in to this one and the wires match up? or were there changes or more wires added in newer years?

If it flat wasn't charging at all, as in it gave a battery warning light, then that could be the voltage regulator.

The brushes wearing down usually manifests itself as the headlights/gauges giving sort of a 'pulsing' effect, not flickering but noticeable if you looked closely. The brushes themselves wear, but the contact point on the armature also wears, so eventually you get two grooves in the alternator shaft and short brushes, which have trouble staying in firm contact, hence the 'pulsing' with the rotation. Replacing the brush assembly fixes this of course, but only until the shaft wears out completely. You can replace the brushes at least once, sometimes more on models where the shaft contact is harder or less worn.

You can use the AC Delco, or the Standard #FX69. Carquest sells the Standard #FX69 as it's own branded part.

Since the regulator is the same that plug will go right on, and the positive terminal will be the same even though it's slightly higher. I don't know for sure that the smaller grey connector is the same, but if it doesn't plug right in you could rig some wiring adapter. My only concern would be it would not be as secure. What I'd probably do is snag that plug & wire from a ~2004 at the salvage yard, then crimp an adapter on the other end for the stock plug, and you have a secure adapter without cutting so you can go back to a stock 91-97 alt if needed.

Pretty sure the sohc won't fit the ohv.send Chris a text, pretty sure me and him was just talking about this.

The mounting looks the same. You may want to do a test fit and be sure the pulley lines up correctly with the belt line before spending any money on it, but it'd still make a good spare for your friend's ranger if replacing the regulator/brushes gets it working.

looks can be deceiving...The back two holes are different,it won't mount on a ohv.the 98+ ohv alt are the 130amp just for reference.just Texted Chris and we did just talk about this and try it.doubt just changing brushes with fix it also

Well I was gonna rebuild it and give it back to him so he could return the duralast bullcrap or keep that as a spare. Since this is motorcraft. But since I came to his work, helped him figure out what was wrong, changed it out in the autozpne parking lot for him he just gave it to me. And I got his duralast battery, since he got a nice new optima lol

I guess ill try and bolt it in tomorrow. Exploders already unplugged and th belts off anyway. If it don't even fit, oh well
