From an engine standpoint, are there any differences between the Explorer and the Sport Trac? I wouldn't think so, but I've been fooled before. For tuning, Doug at Bamachips will be doing mine unless I can get on the dyno at Brenspeed or at Modular Depot.

the 3-valve mustang engine is simular with our engine. the main differences are the mustang has an aluminum block, intake manifold, throttle body, cam profile, and computer tune.

MSD coils, FRPP supercharger (w/ air intake track mods and mustang T/B), CMCV delete plates, basically any engine mod that a 05+ mustang can use.

I guess I should've held on to all those parts.:(

Are any of the Mustang parts verified to be a direct bolt on? I know we share the same engine, but it seems most things dont match up without modification.

The internal parts will work, for sure. I also feel that the supercharger kits would bolt up, but tuning would be different due to the heads/cams we have. If you use the positive displacement blowers (Kenne Bell, Whipple, Saleen), you would even have an equal intake. I have no idea what heads/cams would cost. I shudder to think about it. My main issue so far is the lack of space for dual exhaust. These 4.6's sound really nice with an H-pipe and true duals :(

I already have the KKM intake on my Ex and now that I see that sexy K&N, I'm wondering if it would be worth the cash and the time to replace the KKM. Would the K&N have much better performance?

Also, how much could the throttle body help?

thats a very good question. i'd definitely like to know too

I have everything on that list and then some. The metal K&N was a HUGE difference. Granted, most of my mods before that were fuel/spark mods, but still. The guy that has the shop across from me rode to lunch with me and asked if I had installed nitrous.

LOL that you had nitrous when you had the KN intake?

did it improve your mpg? i'm unsure what exact improvements will having an intake do for me.

i was juggling between intake or exhaust system..

The supercharger kits will likely bolt up to the 4.6 3v engine in the Explorer but there will usually be some items that will need modified to still make it fit. It is similar enough where you could get it to operate well with a little work but I doubt it will be a drop-in. Not a beginners mod.

The tunefile would be different regardless of the cams and whatnot due to there being other vast differences between the X and S197 Mustang. Still tuning is tuning is tuning and you will dial your AFR's in the same manner with the Explorer as you will with a Mustang. Do keep in mind that there may be a limit of fueling allowed in the Explorer tuning that will not happen with the Mustang's. If you just bolt a KB or Saleen s/c on and run it to 400-425rwhp on the stock bottom end then you will probably be fine. When I was commanding about 550rwhp worth of fuel through my Gen3 the computer started dropping fuel. We were able to work around it and I finished tuning it but it is worth mentioning that there might exist something like this within the Gen4 Explorer tuning as well.

Ironman, I just did a road trip. I get better gas milage when I'm nice to it, but MUCH worse milage when I'm not.

Yeah but with a Muscle Car soul and the audio feedback we get when we open this baby up, this thing wants us to be mean ;)

hi flyguy, you have the EXACT SAME CAR AS ME. V8 ironman and 2007 haha.. i was wondering, with the KKM intake, does it make your car roar as if you had a muffler or something, or anything like that?

Any improvements you had from getting the KKM intake?

i'm juggling between the KKM and K&N Intakes.... and if i should get the exhaust system first. :(

Yeah, the KKM makes the engine a bit more aggessive sounding, mostly at wide open throttle... barely a differnce at idle. If I had to buy again, I would probaly go with the K&N though....

BTW, I noticed someone has the metal K&N... is there any reason for the metal one other than cosmetics? I would imagine if anything, it would transfer engine heat more....

I have the metal one.
I initially selected it based on the dyno charts. I'm thankful for it, though 'cause I'm switching to a Mustang manifold and throttle body, and all I'll have to change is the end connector. I also wrapped it in the "Cool Intake System" by Heatshield Products.

I thought I read the non-metal one had 1 addition HP on the dyno... of course thats well within a margin of error.
