I have a 02 XLT with a weak 4.0 V6 in it. I have a built 4.6 that was destine for another project that was sold. I want to put the 4.6 in my XLT. Can someone point me in the right direction? I realize that the bolt on stuff for the upper intake will need to sourced but I am wondering if this has been done before?

Not to my knowledge. But it could be done with some serious work. Your main problem is going to be electrical. You will probably have to replace all the wiring behind the dash as well. Also, will the v6 fuel lines be big enough, fuel pump, etc... Good luck with the project

I don't think the 4.6 will fit in the second gens. I think the motor is too wide for trucks before 2003. The fuel lines and pump would be fine. Most of the wiring (less the ECU and the GEM) would be the same. Several members have swapped in v8's in place of the v6' but it is usually a 5.0, which originally came in Explorers so they are direct bolt ins using all factory parts, you keep the AC, and lose some headaches.

My 02 is exactly the same as an 03/04. It came with an optional V8. The research I have done so far requires only the ECU and wiring harness for the engine only. I just have to find a wrecked XLT with harness and ECU still entact. There is 37 different ECU codes and 9 different wiring harnesses that are available from the 02 to 05 models.

The internals behind the dash are the same. The tranny is the same (according the service manual) and almost everything from the bellhousing back is the same.

Your right, I was thinking the second gens went to 2002. A 4.6 should fit right in. The different ECU's are probably for v6 2wd, v6 4wd, 4.6 2wd, 4.6 awd, 4.6 4wd, and then there would be the California low emmissions, and each year probably have a different set of codes. As long as the ECU you get has the same t case that you are using, and the same year you should probably be ok.
