2002 Explorer Xlt V8
I cant stand my explorer. Earlier today i was at this traffic light starting out and i had this slow semi truck about 20 or so car lengths ahead of me.... To the right of me was this Explorer looked like an 03 probably a V6 it was a lady driver :p ... so it was no threat i was just gonna leave her in the dust and keep going... Well as soon as i get on it, she floors it too.. From about 15 to 50 we were both flooring it side by side. Then she actually started to pull on me like 5 feet and i had to slam on the brakes and get behind her unless i wanted to be under the semis back tires. So by now im thinking wow, she probably had a V8 too. Then i Look and its actually a V6 i still feel sick!!!!!

I dont know if her V8 logo fell off or what, i didnt think my truck was THAT slow i know it has mushy slow shifts but Come on.... SO i think its time for my first mod or somethin. So im thinking either...

or the usual cold air intake. If anybody has any experience with the kenne bell things let me know.

gears? stick vs auto? tire size? driver? add-on's?

there are just too many variables, the SOHC makes good power and has a nice powerband too (rev happy) not sure about your 4.6L in the Sploder, but if you are looking for more power you have alot of options from mild to wild.

I have a explorer xlt 4.6 auto completely stock. The other one was a Xlt 4.0 stock. I guess what i want to know is what mod would you start with for the most bang for your buck. Cold air intake or one of the kenne bell mods i listed.

I just ran an errand a few secs ago and i was wondering what would happen if i took a dremmel to the airbox like some guys have done on here. But since i was in a hurry i just unlatched the top part and the hose from the air box and just left it off and closed the hood. Well when i got on the road the truck accelerated awesomely. The rpms went all the way up to 6.5 which it never does and it basically drove and sounded like a fast car. Well i can only imagine how horrible that is for the engine. Once i was iddling for a while 10 mins later it felt like the engine was going to shut off at any moment. The idle didnt sound steady. So i lifted the hood and put the hose and box back the way found it.
Then on the way home it drove the same fun way it did with the airbox appart. The rpms werent AS high they were more like 5.5 or 6. Then when i was iddling the engine felt like usual.

SO im wondering if i can get the truck to drive like this all the time if i put in a cold air intake. Or if i dremel holes in the airbox. Or will it stay like this for a while since i had the air box undone earlier. BTW it was about 80 outside. How do you think think it would drive in hotter weather for longer distances.

Hawks you gotta search man!
the cold air intake and exhaust can improve the performance of your lawnmower.
But you are always only as good as your smallest bottleneck
the First thing to do is remove the factory restrictions.

You can gain a good amount of ooompf using just simple bolt on aftermarket parts, then a chip, yes.

Like I said Mild to Wild, the 4.6L has a HUGE aftermarket.
Start small, but be careful you will then be addicted and it will never end....take a look at Rocket's Gen III on this site.....woweewow

the 4.0 SOHC has a faster 0 to 60 time than the 5.0 and the 4.6. I think the 5 speed auto makes the difference. I didn't believe it until I saw it on a spec. sheet. I'm glad I have the SOHC. Except the timing chain rattle thing :D

Badgett - where did you see this spec sheet. I test drove maybe 5 '02 and '03 4.0 explorers before I found an '02 4.6 for my mom, and each of the 4.0's felt like pigs, even compared to my 4.0 ohv ranger. The 4.6 is not mind blowing, but it definately had a power and speed advantage to the 4.0.

Ive raced several 4.0 SOHC and OHV's in my 2wd v8 Mountaneer. Ive never lost a race to an Explorer, from a stop they v8 isnt as good i think. Wants the v8 hits 3 grand it pulls alot harder then a 4.0.

I saw it on this site somewhere. Maybe useful threads. Someone had a spec. document and it had 0-60 times on it. My 4x4 5 speed auto 4.0 SOHC will outrun my Mountaineer 4.6 AWD every time. I think the AWD system robs alot of the V8's power.

I dont know about the 2002's, but for the 1997 year, the SOHC 6 was definetly faster then the V8 in the spec sheets. That being said, our 2002 V8 is no doubt faster then my SOHC.

None of those Kenne Bell accessories will work for your truck. You cannot use the switch chip because your X's computer cannot be chipped (but it can be reflashed) and you will get NO benefit from the BAP because unless your running a supercharger you wont need the extra fuel either.

If you want more power get a CAI, exhaust and SCT Xcal2 flash. That will get you real close to 300hp at the crank. That will hold you well enough in most cases. If you want more than that you can either go with a shot of nitrous or a supercharger. The only place that makes a kit for the 02+ 4.6 V8 Explorers is Allen Superchargers; however as you can see, other supercharger systems can and have been adapted.

Do a search on this in here and you will find more than enough information on getting more power for your 4.6. It is a VERY mod friendly powertrain! Just got to have the money to mod it.

No it doesn't. A four door 4.0 when compared to a four door 4.6 will be slower on ALL accounts when they are of similar configuration (IE 4x4, AWD, 2WD). Now when a person compares a Sport model is when things become a little blurred together due to the Sports big weight advantage. BTW after 2002 all full size Explorer had the 5 speed auto, so no advantage or difference between the V6 or V8 model when looking at that either.

my 02 mounty has a 4 speed AWD. It seems more powerful when driving it after I drive the 4.0 explorer. But the 4.0 hands it ass to it everytime my wife and I run them against each other. We even switched drivers to see if it were driver error. I'm not saying I'm right about all this , I'm just going by my expierences. Maybe it's just my 4.6 has a problem of some sort. I will get it checked out to make sure it's running right.

Your 02 Mounty has a 5 speed unless you did some sort of tranny swap.

There must be something wrong with your 4.6 or we are not seeing all the variables being presented here. For fear of sounding like a jerk, are you SURE your Mounty has the 4.6 liter V8 engine??? Good luck man.
