V8 explorer question

I have no clue if this is the correct forum to ask or not. Sorry.

I am starting to look for a 5.0 to swap into my 56, so this is the start of research. I have found several 5.0 EFI (not H.O.) engines with the AOD behind them. They are in everything since 86 (or so).

The H.O. versions seem to be in mustangs (AOD and T-5) and mark VIIs (AOD). There are not easy to find (at least around here).

What are the explorer ones? Any information about them would be appreciated. Are they roller blocks, Hp, torque, years and models they were in...anything will be helpful.

I don't know all of the info, but I know that 96 was the first year that the 5.0 was offered in the Explorer. Also, the trans behind the 5.0 was the 4R70W until the 2002 models (I think). My 97 manual says they use hydraulic roller lifters.

I will admit I don't know anything about mustangs, but that sounds better than the H.O. Am I missing something internally like forged pistons, roller rockers, or something?

Anyone know the Hp@rpm and torque@rpm?

I thought the 4R70W was in the AWD, but this page, shows a regular tail shaft. 4R70W Hmm.....

the 4R70W was used in all V8s 96-01, and as far as i know it was used in the 97-03 f-150s(not all but i know my grandpas 03 5.4 has it)

the 4R70W is a AOD-E witha wide ratio gearset.

The AOD-E = computer controlled

This is a FANTASTIC transmission for a car or truck behind the 5.0L

The GT-40p 5.0L (97.5-01 Explorer) is likely the best small block pushrod V8 Ford ever made.

You have a couple of choices for stuffing this V8 into your 56, you can use a older Mustang computer (pre 95) and put a distributor in the block. If you want to use the 4r70w transmission you can use the Baumman Engineering transmission controller to shift and control the shifting of the trans (complete adjustability)

You can use the HO Mustang engine as well, but it has ALOT less power and alot less torque (in a old heavy truck you want torque)

My buddy put a HO Stang engine into his 93 4 door Explorer and it lacks some power IMO, if he was to do it over again he would use the GT-40.

The Explorer V8s maybe a little hard to swap in if you want to keep computer and all. But if you're just using the block and such, you'll be fine.
