Guys I've been having some bad luck with my X and I'm spending so much money trying to get it fixed. Has anyone ever thrown a V8 in an early model? Is it possible even. I'm no car expert if you can't tell. If so, how much am I looking at spending?

Yes, a 302 (5.0 V8) can be put in the early model explorer, but as I hear, there's a lot of work and money involved. If you do a search, there are a lot of threads involving this subject.

I don't mean to be an ass, so please don't take it like that.

Just go to the Conversions forum. There's always someone doing or talking about a V8 swap. Also, just do a search for "engine swap" or something like that. You should find plenty of info. After you've read all the threads you can find, post specific questions either in those threads, or start a new one if you have a big question. Good luck with whatever you do.

It's cheaper to get a later model that already has a V8 and transfer your bolt on goodies to it, IMHO

Depends on what your goodies are. If you have a nice off-road suspension, it won't swap on. If you 'wheel it, you won't be too happy with the AWD V8 X, since there's no low range. So, if you look at it that way - You get your late model V8 AWD X (we'll say a '97) and now you need to get it as off-road worthy as your old truck was. First, transfer case swap. Depending on what you get, probably around 1k to 2k. Then your suspension. Hmm... swap in a solid axle? Not easy at all. A long-travel SLA front end that keeps 4x4 would need to be custom fabbed for an Explorer (i've never found anyone making stuff for it). It gets messy. Just depends on what you're going to do.

I believe they started put V8's in the 93 model year... I don't think they went IFS until 95. I may be wrong, cause I have a 92 and am gonna hold on to it until I qualify for antique plates. I love it. Shakes, 6, A4LD and everything. Just gonna do some facelifting instead of getting my Ferrari.

"I believe they started put V8's in the 93 model year..."

I wish!!!!! Actually, V8 Explorers were not made until 1996, The only engine option before 1996 was the 4.0L OHV V6.

I seen a book while at my local 4x4 shop that dealt with the V8 Conversion in earlier Rangers and Explorers. I don't know what all this book entailed, or how detailed it was as I did not look at it. But if you are willing to make a long distance phone call I am sure that the guy running the place can tell you what the book is and whether or not it is what you are looking for.
