I want to install a fuel saver/vacuum gauge in my 97 Ex with the 5.0 and AWD. My wife uses twice the gas I do when she drives it, and I would like her to learn when she is too far into the right foot! My problem is.. where is a good place to get a vacuum source on these things?? If you have any ideas, please tell me, and include pics if you can! thanks in advance.

Doesn't really matter "where" you pull it as long as its always got vacuum. Basically, any of the vacuum ports off the intake will work. Personally, I'd choose a small hose so I could just "T" into it easily. IIRC, the vacuum line under the dash for the blend door is not direct vacuum. There is a check valve there so you don't want to t off of that.

Also, when we installed one on a friends f-150 (5.0 motor) that once it goes into OD the vacuum numbers read really low (much lower rpms). Soo, that being said, using the vacuum gauge to learn when your using more gas "in that one gear" would work. Using it to figure out which gear your going to use less fuel in won't work.

Well. my wife tends to just "stomp" the gas on my AWD. Pretty much everyone on this site knows that if you do that to these things they dog and take more gas. But, if she drives it like she drives her minivan, I KNOW she is nailing it. It was more of a way for HER to gauge how hard she was taking off form a start.

Put a piece of wood under the accelerator. Lock the radio on a station that she can't stand. Pull the fuse for the AC. Shortly after that, she'll stop driving it... :D

LOL!

Good luck with this one. ;)

I had to install an auto trans in my built 78 Trans AM, as my wife would rest her foot on the clutch pedal. Installed Three 3500 lb Zoom clutches in 3 months.

Tried to cut her off from driving it, she threatened to cut me off from you know what.:thumbdwn:

Divorce was the only real way to stop her, man I miss my dog.

Sorry for the Hijack! Hope it all works out for you.

Yolanda's mom was a 2 footed driver (bad gas mileage and kept burning up brakes).. I was getting the parts together to put a loud buzzer in there if the brakes were hit when the throttle was pressed...

She has since stopped driving (gave up her keys after a close call)....
</hijack>

The gauge should should help her "see" what she is doing with the throttle.. Which gauge are you buying? JCWhitney has a big (5" or so) gauge that has fake mpg numbers on it.. Or, are you getting just a vacuum gauge (2 1/16") that just shows inches of vacuum?

I'd honestly spend the money and get a Scan Gauge. They plug into the OBDII port and one of the screens is an instant MPG. It also reads the sensors, overall MPG, and is a scan tool.

Worth the money.

I was thinking of putting a tranny temp gauge in anyhow, and get a two pot pillar pod and put the 2 of them in there. Just the simple kind. I actually have one some where in storage from my 72 Nova, that shows MPG's, just need to locate it. It had several Autometers in it. I would do the Scan Gauge in it if I had the $$$. But, for now, the vacuum gauge would give her something "visual" to let her know she is on it hard. She is one of "those". that need to see something in order to grasp it.

Dude, thats funny!

You can get a scangauge-
it plugs into the data port, and is easily mounted.

It will read trans temp-and MPG among other things
It displays 4 at a time-you select which 4 gauges from the list.

ooopsdangit edit--ok hows this
I second the scangauge suggestion

It reads trans temp? I have a 1st gen which doesnt, and the website doesnt list trans temp either.

It works on OBD2 only

Trans temp worked in my 98 Mounty, so it should work for the OP

So I would not have to install anything but the scan gauge?? No sending unit? COOL! Can you help me convince my wife that I NEED this!!??
