Ok my wife's car is a 08 ford explorer with the v6 and 86,000 miles or so. It's started to have a hard shift going to 3rd gear, I took it to mechanic he hooked it up to a computer and noticed the VSS showed low current he then tested it to make sure the sensor was getting current which is was he wants to charge me $200 to replace a sensor. A few questions here I was not having any noticeable speedo problems so does it sound like a VSS issue, my second question is I hear they are pretty easy to get to, can I just do it my self? Thank y'all for all y'all's help

Jason

It definitely sounds like a possibility as that's what the transmission uses to determine when to shift.

Thank you for the quick reply do you know where the sensor is located on an 08?

I'm not sure. I think it's linked to one of the rear abs modules but I could be wrong. I'm sure a quick google search would tell you though.

Ok I couldn't find anything on google, but I got under the truck and talked to ford there are 3 on the driver side of the trans does anybody have any idea on how to test each one

How much have you already paid your mechanic for the diagnosis? That is an obscene amount to pay for installation of a $30.00 part, but I'm wondering if part of that estimate was for the diagnosis?

I've got a '99 Grand Marquis in a shop right now, being diagnosed for misfire on #3 cylinder. Known good coils were tried, but no success. He's going to be a while tracking down the problem. That's going to cost hours. It's something I couldn't fix myself, so I'm resolved to paying somebody else a "fair price" to do it. If you can't trust your mechanic, it's time to find a new one. If you think you're being gouged, take your business elsewhere.

Yea when I heard the price just to put it on the computer I was a bit taken back, however the circuitry to the sensors seems good, however there are 3 VSS sensors on the side of the trans so I'm not sure which one is actually causing the shift problem.
