Hi guys, well it looks like i finally had a problem that i coudnt find any threads about:

I have a 98 X sport. I just had a Viper 55esp alarm/remote starter installed. The first time it was installed incorrectly and my 4WD didnt work, the lights would flash everyonce in a while. I got it reinstalled and everything seems to work fine now..............until today';

on my way home from school i noticed the 4WD hi AND low lights flashing in sync, theyd flash 4 or 5 times in a row every few minutes. I pulled over and tried to engage it, the lights didnt even go on.

my dad made a suggestion and i did it- i disconnected the battery to re-set everything, and now it works again. Could this be a problem because of my Viper alarm or jut coincidence and maybe my switch is going bad???

side note: i have 108,000 miles and everything works fine. all i ever had to replace was the thermostat. I do the oil every 3K too. should i have my trans fluid replaced? what other fluids should i have replaced? When i switch to 4wheel Low it makes 1 clank but then works fine--- just need some cleaning?

thanks

I'm thinking you have a problem with the speed sensors. Clean them and see if that works out. After reading that you have over 100k miles on the clock, the speed sensors should be pretty dirty.

The flashing lights are caused when the GEM detects a problem with the 4wd system.

Apparently, it was an intermittent problem since it went away (at least temporarily) when you reset the GEM by removing power.

Cleaning the driveshaft speed sensors is a good suggestion because if they are not feeding back the 'correct' signal to the GEM it could cause the lights to flash.

If that doesn't help, you could also clean the contacts inside the shift motor. The GEM determines the position of the shift motor from the signal fed back by the contacts. If the contacts are dirty, it could also cause the problem with the flashing lights.

Also, if the lights flash again, it is possible to read the GEM trouble codes if you have a scanner with that capability.

UPDATE

Hey guys. Well i had my car at Ford today and got some bad news... my problem was because the T-Case motor went bad. I had that fixed and the transmision flushed and all in all it came to $802......

If anyone is having a similar problem and has any questions about what happened with mine feel free to email me. sk1er18@aol.com

Thanks again for your help!

Matt

Sorry, but I think the dealer took you for ~$700. They replaced the shift motor, not the entire T/F case right?

I believe they just changed the motor. but that $800 included:

Diagnostic (rip off)
Front pinion
Motor
Engine/Transmision FLUSH (that was like $150)
And they raped me with labor.

I think the labor part was $430 and the rest was parts and the Flush.
