I LOVE Volant intakes. I had one on my '00 Sport with SOHC and then modified it to use on my V8 (Volant doesn't do one for the 5.0). Intakes all pretty much work the same, but the Volant looks great under the hood and is a more refined system than the others I've seen. Pricey though. One of my fave mods.

I had a Volant on my ST, but I did not like the fit of the air box. The air box rests on the stock plate and is not held in place by anything other than (a) being wedged in or (b) gravity. On some of the rougher roads, I could hear it clunk as it essentially gained air and dropped.

After listening to that for a week or so, I changed to a K&N CAI. The kit mounts to the bolt on the alternator, so it is secured in. As celly implied, the Volant looks much nicer, but for me, the K&N's design was better.

Some folks have used the Volant without problems, or alternatively, do not hear any clunks. They're likely in the majority.

Never had a "clunk". It was a very snug fit with both my Explorers. Nowhere to move really. I actually love the fact I can get it in and out in 30 seconds if needed.

Then again, I don't have a Sport Trac which might have different clearances.

Recall Brian that the 19640 didn't fit well in my 99 Limited either. I agree that the lack of mounting is a poor design choice. I played with mine quite a bit because of one wrong sized coupler. A coupler that I bought locally made for a difficult installation of the intake pipe etc. When in mine could be moved around in the pocket with more slack in some positions, less in others.

Mine is tight enough as it is now, slight chafing at front edge under the radiator support. I'll probably place something there to improve that, when I change to the Amsoil air filter.

For my 302 when I get to the supercharger I shall probably build my own box to fit better, a bigger filter, and sealed to the fender or support. Regards,

well i just went with the K&N Air Intake 57-2529-1 57 Series FIPK > Performance Intake Kit and the rest of the list. came out to $5200 out the door. i will have to post some pictures when all said and done. probably in a week or so.

That's a heck of a mod list. Definitely post pictures when you have them!
